What’s on: The Muddy Guide 5 – 11 Dec 2014
Plenty to choose from if you’re out and about this week — whether you’re feeling festive or looking to escape all those Christmas preparations.
Graphic Art Week at M-Sieve Art Gallery, St Albans, 6 to 12 Dec
Graphic Art Week is number 4 in a series of 7 week-long exhibitions at M-Sieve – a pop-up gallery that’s aiming to bring a London art vibe to St Albans until 20 Dec. The artists they’re showing are a diverse bunch, and Graphic Art Week – as well as the following Print Maker Week – manage to cram a whole load of variety into a relatively small space. There are pieces from the featured artists – all of them relative newcomers – available to buy, and includes a range of media. And when I say range, we’re talking beanie hats as well as more prints, paintings and so on.
Wreath-making workshops and Christmas shopping, 6 and 7 Dec
It’s all going on at Frithsden Vineyard this weekend. There are two workshops with local Garden School teacher Helen Reeley to get you making your own Christmas wreath. The previous workshops have been a load of fun and very popular, so you will have to book in advance. Last time I checked, there were still a few places left. And then, once you’ve put together something gorgeous for the door, there’s a chance to relax with a spot of shopping – and you’re at a vineyard, so guess what they’re going to be selling…
Hogwarts in the Snow
I finally took my eldest to the Harry Potter Warner Brothers Studio Tour this time last year, and you’d have to be a hard-hearted soul not to think Hogwarts looks blinkin’ fantastic when it’s all covered in sparkly snow and decked out for Christmas. And I’m going to have to go back – not that I mind – because this year, not only do they have real snow (ok, I know it’s not real) falling, but they’ve managed to magic up some properly flickering ‘fire’ in the Great Hall and the Gryffindor common room – and even on the Christmas puds!
Victorian Christmas at Audley End, 6 & 7 Dec
Take a step back to a time when, if you were lucky, you had an army of servants to do all the hard work of Christmas for you. This weekend’s Victorian Christmas at Audley End in Saffron Waldon looks like a lovely family day out – with all kind of bits and bobs to keep you (and any smaller folk) interested. There’s lots going on inside the house,an old-fashioned fair out on the lawns, toymakers in the stable yard – you get to have a go, too – as well as roasted chestnuts (one of my many weaknesses this time of year) and, of course, Father Christmas.
Luisa Omeilan – What Would Beyonce Do?!
The Court Theatre in Tring might be small, but it attracts some serious talent to their Get Stuffed comedy club. This week, it’s the return of Luisa Omielan with her brilliantly-titled show ‘What Would Beyonce Do?!‘ She sold out – twice – with this show in Edinburgh and again for multiple nights at London’s Soho and Leicester Square theatres so is busy adding extra dates for next year. And now here she is in Tring, our very own pocket rocket of a town. Love it.
