Oh, you shouldn’t have….

1 Feb 2016

retro-valentine-21
Right, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner.  I know, I know, how could you have failed to notice the whacking great hearts that are in just about every shop window?

Don’t know about you, but I’m after something a bit more exciting than a last-minute box of Dairy Milk and a bunch of flowers this year (are you on it, Mr C?).  I know it’s all very commercial and… well, it’s still nice to know you’re loved, right?

So, here are some ideas.  You might want to act on them.  You might want to leave them where someone you want to act on them will see them.

Gifts You’ll Actually Want to Get….

Chocolate

If you’re going to get chocolate, then make it proper chocolate.  Made You Smile in Hitchin has a stunning range – and, best of all, you get to customise your selection.  No more arguing over who has to eat the orange cream.   The range of flavours is utterly delicious – I’ve done some research for you, you’ll be pleased to know.   And, get this, they make gin and tonic truffles.  Need I say more….?

Dinner

Going out for dinner on Valentine’s Day can be a bit (a) expensive and (b) crowded.  Staying in isn’t always that thrilling though, either.  What to do?  Well, get Luke at LHK Catering, a chef with Michelin-restaurant experience, to deliver a delicious meal right to your house instead?  Much more than a takeaway – and without the bloke with the bucket full of over-priced roses hanging round your table.  Or maybe arrange it for another day – something to look forward to?

Pudding

If you’re a pudding person – or, should I say, if your loved one is – then this is the perfect gift.  The Pudding Stop in St Albans is the place for pud (if you’ve not been, get your good self down there now), and they do vouchers.  Seriously, their doughnuts are the stuff that dreams are made on – and  their brownies are to die for.  They also do brunch (my favourite meal of the day), with pancakes and French toast and bacon sarnies and…. you get the picture.  Voucher for pud = bliss for you.

Massage

Downstairs at Totality Day Spa in Tring, they have a gorgeous room where you and your sweetie could both enjoy a treatment at the same time.  A voucher on Valentine’s Day that lets you both book in – and it doesn’t even have to be for the same thing – would be very relaxing and would (just saying) go down very well in my house.  Aromatherapy massage, Indian Head massage, Lava Shells massage (my favourite), you choose.

Art

Perhaps you’re looking for something a bit more long-lasting.  Maybe a piece of original art would be an idea?  Berkeley Gallery in Berkhamsted have a great selection, and some really diverse choices – check out the list of artists they stock.  Whether it’s internationally known artists like Ben Riley, or locally-based ones like Sally Bassett, there’s sure to be something you and your other half can agree on to pop over the fireplace.

So, feeling romantic yet….?

Have your say
