Whaddya mean you’ve not booked anything….?
It hasn’t escaped my notice that it’s Valentine’s Day this weekend (although I do fear it might have escaped Mr C’s). Assuming that you’ve not booked a restaurant already — or that you’re looking for something more interesting to do (you get extra points for originality!), here are a few suggestions to get you and your main squeeze in the mood for luurrve this weekend….
Hearts in the Park, Aldenham Country Park, 13-14 Feb
You can get all romantic with your honey in the great outdoors this weekend at Aldenham Country Park. All day, there’ll be symbols of love from around the world all over the park – hunt ‘em down like Cupid! — and their ‘bard’ will be reciting some of Shakespeare’s sweetest sonnets by the Enchanting Tree at 2, 3, and 4pm. Want to surprise your sweetie? Email email@example.com and she’ll help you organise a love letter, or chocs, or something else – a great big rock, maybe? – to be waiting for your loved one at the Enchanting Tree. *sigh*
Film Club: Bridget Jones, The Pudding Stop, St Albans, 14 Feb, 8pm
Oh my. This has all the makings of a crackin’ night out with the girls — never mind a date night. Bridget Jones on the big screen — and a choice of the most delicious puddings, like, proper puddings. (The Pudding Stop is my spiritual home…) What would make it even more thoroughly perfect would be if I could wear my pyjamas. Funny, though, but Mr C takes a dim view of me heading out in public dressed like that…
Valentine’s Dinner in the Great Hall, 13-14 Feb
Yes, you can actually book a table for 2 in the Great Hall at Hogwarts this weekend. Three course dinner — then you get to wander hand in hand around the attraction, looking at all the Potter paraphenalia (assuming you can stop gazing into each other’s eyes) before coffee and chocolates at the castle model. Expelliamus, Valentine blues!
Chinese New Year, London
If you want to avoid all those hearts and flowers altogether, you could ditch the lot and go join in the festivities for Chinese New Year up in London. Loads to see and do — and always an amazing spectacle. It’ll be busy, but it’ll be fun — and loud. Xin Nian Kuai Le!
Dinner after all?
Ok, so maybe dinner out would be good… Hermitage Rd in Hitchin has a rather lovely Valentine menu you’ll want to check out. The Alford Arms in Frithsden is always glorious (and has some cosy corners). Water Lane in Bishop’s Stortford has the distinct advantage of a very stylish cocktail bar downstairs in the cellar. You could soak up some art deco glamour (and more cocktails) at The Gatsby in Berkhamsted, maybe? Or go all informal with the best burgers at The Meating Room in St Albans.
Have fun, lovelies!
