British Museum collaboration silk twill scarf. £132

Charlotte Allen was awarded a scholarship from Paul Smith and gained experience working in his print studio before founding Klements. She started out as a fine artist in portrait painting, studied print design at Nottingham Trent University and went on to do an MA in fashion design. I first came across Klements when Charlotte was living in St Albans. Her scarves have been worn by Lady Gaga and Daughter. The success of her business has taken her to Hackney, but she says that one day she will return to the county. Here is a sneak preview of her SS17 Cult of Nature Collection, including a collaboration with the British Museum. Charlotte designed prints inspired by Aphrodite, the Gayer-Anderson cat and the Parthenon’s Horse of Selene. Charlotte draws and paints her designs by hand and the scarves are made in Italy, by a manufacturer in Como. She started out just with scarves but now that she makes garments, these are printed and made in England. The scarves are available from the British Museum shop and from the Klements website. Here is a rather wonderful kimono. I think it would look equally fine with opaque tights. Or whatever takes your fancy.

British Museum Kimono £440

A natural storyteller, when Charlotte was living in St Albans, the elaborate door knockers in the Fishpool Street area caught her eye. She says that inspiration comes from everywhere. This scarf prompted estate agent Aubrey and Finn to commission her to make it into wallpaper and cushions for the interior of their shop.

‘I adore the Cathedral conservation area in St Albans,’ says Charlotte. ‘I am quite sure I will return here to live at some point in my life. There is a magic here like nowhere else.’

Whenever you’re ready, Charlotte. You know you’ll always be welcome in Snorbens.
