The Alford Arms

Find the unruffled hamlet of Frithsden, near Berkhamsted and you’ll find the award-winning Alford Arms. This pubby gem nestling in its secluded wooded valley has the great Ashridge forest on its doorstep and the broad sweep of the Chiltern Hills as its backdrop.

Inside, rich fabrics and antique artwork set the mood. Wooden tables and chairs gleaned from nearby auctions add the tone and an open fire stands ready.

Beyond the classic country bar the elegant freshness of the dining room is revealed. The ying and yang of the modern, essential pub: hearty cheer in the front and refined dining in the back. It’s best to book of course but if you haven’t there’s rarely a chance of you leaving hungry – the Alford’s jolly crew would scarce allow it.

Our menu ticks all the boxes – classics and twists abound, bashed up with hints of far-flung places and a taste of Empire. From field to farm, hedgerow to forest, the sound of the sea and the thrill of the hunt, food is our passion. We move with the seasons and the daily Specials on the chalkboard speak of freshness and invention. What we bring to the table is fabulous food, constructed with care and packed with flavour.

Nab a table in the front parlour or on the terrace when the Great British Summer is in full swing and enjoy the same sense of wellbeing as the fine-diners in their reserved seats. In need of a working lunch – no problem! You’re phone may not have a signal but free wifi will provide a soothing umbilical to the world outside.

Find the Alford and you’ll find the seemingly impossible: Bibulous bonhommie and Great British food all served up with a calm, friendly efficiency.

Find it and be content.
