Pretty thatched and half timbered cottages, a a serene cricket green and oodles of jolly old village spirit. It's magic. Find out more about one of Bedfordshire's real gems. Ickwell is stunning classic Beds village – centred around a verdant cricket green and a permanently erected Maypole – which comes complete with delightful annual festivities. There are gorgeous thatched and half-timbered cottages, and you’re just on the outskirts of zippy market town, Biggleswade, and nestling up to Bedford.

There is a great village pub, The Crown. It’s got a buzzy beer garden, and an elegant dining space, with barn-like high ceilings and exposed brickwork. There are also some lovely pubs a mile or two down the road, like the Hare and Hounds at Old Warden. Just north of the village (a three-minute drive) you’ll find the trendy Pallet Cafe and to the south the Southill Tea Room so that caffeine fix is never more than five minutes away. Don’t panic.

I’m not going to lie to you, Ickwell is not known for its shopping. However, just a mile or so away you’ll find Upper Caldecote, you’ll find G & M Growers Farmshop and the charming Acorn Antiques. And, you’ve also got the fab Franklins Farm Butchers in nearby Northcote.

The Shuttleworth Collection – with hangers packed out with vintage aircraft, cars and motorbikes, all in working order. They often hold Airshows, which are a great family day out.

Not surprisingly, properties in this smashing village are like gold dust. And with this high demand, comes high price tags. Prices for large thatched cottages and red bricks hover around the £1 million mark, and the AVERAGE price in the village is just over £950k. Stings a bit, doesn’t it? But it is totally, absolutely, fantastically gorg. Country Properties and Cooper Wallace are great agents to contact if you interested in Ickwell.

There is a great selection of independents in the Bedford area, including Bedford Girls’ School (prep & senior), Bedford School (boys prep & senior), Bedford Modern (co-ed prep & senior) and Polam (nursery & prep to 9-years-old) . Ickwell Pre School is rated as ‘good’ and there are primaries in both Northill and Upper Caldecote.

The Bedfordshire Flower School, situated just north of the village that runs various courses and workshops in flower arranging.

40 miles. Biggleswade station is less than a 10-minute drive from this pretty village, with frequent trains getting you into St Pancras in under 45 minutes.
