Top places to live in Bedfordshire Pavenham

Pavenham is perfect for active types and anyone wanting to get involved in village life, with it's numerous clubs and facilities. It's also very gorgeous and super-close to buzzing Bedford and all its great independents. Top 200 Places to Live series.

Pavenham is another awesome Beds village that’s previously been listed in The Sunday Times ‘Best Places to Live’ guide. Again, if you’re after a small village close to great commuting links (six miles to Bedford), this is a classic. It’s got the lot – super-cute cottages, a pretty church, village hall, cricket green, tennis club, and even a golf club – so an excellent choice for sporty types.

The Cock at Pavenham is a really convenient, friendly pub right on your doorstep. They do a great range of wood-fired pizzas on a Friday (you can take away) and a classic Sunday lunch menu.

Bedford is very close by for all its brilliant independent shops and cafes (see our Bedford guide for more) and there are convenience stores in the neighbouring villages of Sharnbrook and Harrold for when you just need a few bits and bobs.

The village is situated on the Great Ouse river, so riverside ambles are the order of the day. There are also two nature reserves – Stevington Marsh and the Pavenham Osier Beds for wildlife spotting. FYI, an osier bed is an area traditionally planted with willows grown for basket making and other woven crafts. You learn something new every day, hey?

Surprisingly, in this small and highly-sought after village, the average price is £552,660, and there are even bargain terraces, closer to the £350k mark if you keep your eyes peeled.  Check out Michael Graham and Urban & Rural estate agents for more.

You’ll be looking at Bedford-based schools, such as Bedford Girls’ School (prep & senior), Bedford School (boys prep & senior), Rushmoor School, St Andrews School (co-ed prep, girls senior), Pilgrims Pre-Prep, Bedford Modern (co-ed prep & senior), Polam (nursery & prep to 9-years-old).

Twinwoods Adventure – an indoor activity centre, just outside the village. This fab kid-friendly gem offers some really cool activities, such as indoor skydiving, surfing,  shooting and archery and more. It even caters for the wee ones, with a soft play area and if mum’s in need of an escape, there’s a fab health club, complete with pool, gym, sauna and steam. What a find!

63 miles. It’s a 13-minute drive to Bedford station, with trains running regularly from there to London St Pancras in under 50 minutes.
