Love at First Sight

Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Design features here.

Sarah and Yoshie only met six short months ago in Hitchin (they both live in the town), but they’re already finishing each other’s sentences like a happily married couple, and producing designs through their illustration and textiles company that are creating quite the stir locally.

Only last month they launched their illustration, textiles and design company Sas and Yosh – and on their gala night they smartly sold out of one of their signature products, their Oriental Spa tea towel.

You can see why can’t you? I think their designs are beautiful and so striking, and the colour combinations are really unusual.

Unsurprisingly, both have a background in illustration – Sarah as a former art teacher, after completing an MA in Children’s Book Illustration from the Cambridge School of Art, and Yoshie as a graduate from ESMOD, Tokyo’s world-renowned college of fashion. Sarah loves any excuse to draw by the sound of it, and Yoshie is mad about colour and the rest is, well, a range of six designs available as wallpaper, tea towels and wrapping paper!

This being a small, local company, they’re flexible with the designs. So if you love the pattern but want the colour toned down a bit, or prefer the wallpaper as a fabric, they’ll try their best to wave their magic wand and do it. They also take commissions if you want to go down that route.

The girls don’t have a shop as yet, but you can buy online – and prices are reasonable (£12 for a tea towel). Sarah and Yoshie also both work independently – Yoshi designs greeting cards and illustrates kids books, and Sarah’s currently working on a large-scale art mural for a local hospital, but they’re hoping to start working on their second collection together in the New Year, and there are tentative plans for a children’s book collaboration soon, so I’ll keep my shell-like to the ground for you on that one.

In the meantime, their six gorgeous designs will do nicely thanks very much for now. Funnily enough, the living room’s suddenly looking a teensy bit plain. Which wall shall I start with, honey…?
