George Street Canteen

We’re a warm and friendly informal café in the heart of St Albans. Our aim is to use as much locally-sourced and seasonal produce as we can find, and to promote local producers through our menu and our pop-up shop. We are in a tranquil courtyard just off one of the oldest streets in St Albans and we have amazing views of the Cathedral. With indoor and outdoor seating, we welcome families and also dogs.

Our food is colourful, abundant and creative. Our menu includes breakfasts, brunches and lunches, with food cooked to order. Our traditional full English is a popular feast but we also offer a cooked breakfast that feels more Mediterranean, with chorizo, and avocado with a chilli kick. We also make all kinds of delicious sandwiches and sweet treats, including muffins that we bake daily, with many gluten free options.

We’re especially proud of our coffee from the Gentleman Baristas and our Belgian Callebout chocolate is extremely popular Our meat comes from A & C Meats in St Albans, our halloumi and our ice cream are made in Barnet and our goats cheese is from Wobbly Bottom (that really is the name!) in Hitchin. Our bread is baked by Dolce Forno in St Albans.

We have seating upstairs and we have become a popular venue for local groups to meet, from craft and book groups to a regular French club.

We have a pop-up shop where you can buy gifts, all from local producers. At Christmas we have a Christmas tree shop.

We opened in 2016 and we are delighted to have so many regular guests. Everyone comments on the relaxed and friendly family atmosphere. The café is cosy and the building and courtyard have lots of character, from stained glass to beautiful tiles. The walled garden is work in progress and we’re looking forward to holding summer events with lots more ideas in the pipeline.

We look forward to welcoming you.
