The Cricketers, Weston, Hitchin
Muddy says: Looking for a friendly village pub with great food, warm hospitality and hearty country walks? How about a pub with its very own pizza oven? The Cricketers in Weston has it all.
The Cricketers could easily win the award for Cosiest Pub in Herts because you feel at home the minute you walk in. Quite apart from the friendly staff – and friendly locals – there’s an open fire in the bar, a wood burner in the main dining area, and come summer, there’s a wonderful outdoor space and garden. This is a pub that believes in local community and there are any number of celebrations and events involving sports, schools, charity days and evenings and open air cinema. What makes The Cricketers stand out even more as a village pub with the mostest is the fact that it has its very own pizza oven, in the shape of a cricket ball, which means that you can cosy up with delicious thin and crispy pizza and a pint of local ale, which I think fits perfectly with the Muddy ‘urban guide to the countryside’ ethos. What is more, you can even pick up a takeaway pizza on your way home from work. Result. The rest of the menu includes hearty and filled Yorkshire puds during the week, and you can also enjoy more traditional roasts on Sundays. This is a great family destination and children love it here, as do all generations. Choose from salt and pepper squid, local sausages and mash, the Googly pizza, or fish and chips. The curries here are excellent and there’s a great choice of gins and beers. Puds are sticky and saucy. Weston itself is a great spot for walks and you’ll find loads of maps in the bar, or the staff are happy to help with routes and suggestions. The Cricketers is part of the Anglian Country Inns group, a fine family business with integrity and imagination. Put The Cricketers on your map and make a date to step out in north Herts for a hearty walk, followed by a hearty lunch at this fine and family friendly pub that understands hospitality and good food.
