For a spa getaway, Champneys always ranks highly on our list, and they’ve just launched a new selection of mini-breaks bookable for August to December 2020. They’re 100% refundable up to 48 hours before arrival (ideal if the dread C-word wreaks havoc with your plans), and the longer you stay the better the discount. Cliveden House, Taplow
If lockdown has left you in dire need of a little glamour, then Grade I-listed manor Cliveden should heal what ails you. They have some fabulous offers available for this year, including kids staying free during the school holidays (snap this up quick!) and complimentary dinner for two in The Cliveden Dining Room when you book a B&B stay from 1 September 2020. You can even hire their legendary Spring Cottage for a total snip at, er, £10,275 for 7 nights, rather than the usual £14,975. Hey, if it’s good enough for Britney Spears and Michael Jackson, it’s good enough for Muddy.
The Five Arrows, Waddesdon
Wine buffs, dog walkers and couples after a romantic weekend should be all over the historic Five Arrows on the edge of the Waddesdon Estate. Their Friday night special offer is perfect for ending the working week in style, as you’ll get an overnight stay in a classic double room, dinner in the restaurant to the value of £30pp, a glass of Prosecco and a full English or continental breakfast the next morning. Prices start at £165.
Poets House, Ely
Fancy an escape to the cathedral city of Ely? Poets House is ideally placed for a weekend crash pad, and they have some great flexible offers of which to take full advantage in 2020. Their Fabulous Friday Freedom package sounds right up our street, and includes an overnight stay, a bottle of fizz on arrival, a three-course dinner in one of their socially distanced restaurants or outside in the courtyard garden, and breakfast in bed the next morning. Prices start at £199 per room, no deposit required.
Watergate Bay, nr Newquay
Right now, you’ll have to beat people away with a stick for a spot on a Cornish beach so delay your stay at the delightful Watergate Bay until autumn or winter to make the most of your mini-break. Foodies will love the Taste of the Bay package, which includes three nights with a meal at a different spot in the hotel every day (hello Zacry’s, The Living Space and The Beach Hut). Prices from 6 September to 15 October start at £345pp, and prices from November to February start at £330pp.
Boringdon Hall, Plymouth
What better spot to explore Dartmoor National Park and the South Devon coast from than a historic five-star hotel with an award-winning spa? Hardly a hardship. Wivenhoe House, Colchester
This four-star country house hotel near the quayside village of Wivenoe is a picturesque alternative to staying in the centre of Colchester, just a few miles away. Moonfleet Manor, Weymouth
For a family break with the kids (yes, you can bring the dog too), Moonfleet Manor overlooking Fleet is one of our top Dorset picks. While some of the childcare options might be limited at the moment (*sob*), there’s still plenty to entertain little ones, include the fabulous Chesil Beach on the hotel’s doorstep. Avoid the summer holiday rush with Moonfleet’s Autumn Specials, which start at £320 for a two-night stay including breakfast and dinner each evening for two. Tudor Farmhouse, Forest of Dean
If lounging in a spa or sipping wine on a terrace sounds entirely too sedate for you, then Tudor Farmhouse’s new Breakout Staycation package should be right up your street. This three-day package includes the choice between a 90-minute paddle-boarding lesson or a guided wildlife safari in the Forest of Dean. You’ll also get a wild swimming map, a picnic hamper to take to the riverbank, breakfast each morning and dinner on one evening. Prices start at £325 per person.
The Elvetham, Hook
This grand Victorian manor house re-opens its doors on 3 August, so what better time to nab a break in the Hants countryside? The Elvetham are currently offering 25% off stays of two nights or more, up until 30 November 2020. Bundle the kids into a family room for a summer staycation, or escape for a romantic break just the two of you (and don’t forget to upgrade to breakfast in bed for an extra £14.95pp).
Down Hall, Bishop’s Stortford
Pack up and head to the Herts/Essex border for this beauty. Go for a girls’ break to take full advantage of the ESPA products in the Eden Spa and the excellent afternoon tea, or take the kids for entry into Herfordshire’s Paradise Wildlife Park too. This package costs from £159 for a overnight stay for two adults and two children, including breakfast and entrance to the wildlife park, or you can upgrade to the VIP Package for £349 and get a private tour from a zoo-keeper too.

As tempting as it is to head to the Isle of Wight pronto to catch the summer sun, we’re holding off for cooler (and quieter!) autumn. If clay masks in the bath haven’t been meeting your luxury quota of late, plump for a proper pamper at the beautiful Ragdale Hall once it reopens on 27 July. For a base to explore the North Norfolk coastline, you can’t go far wrong with Congham Hall. But saying that, if you don’t want to leave the state-of-the-art spa and 2 AA rosette restaurant, we won’t blame you. Book a stay with the Summer Relaxation package, which nets you three nights with a £146 discount, breakfast every morning and a three-course dinner on two evenings. Rushton Hall, Rushton
This elegant manor hotel is surprisingly relaxed, considering the grandeur of its surroundings – ideal if you want a pampering weekend but don’t want to be dolled up to the nines just to go to breakfast. Speaking of pampering, you’d be amiss to skip the spa here, as it’s a thing of beauty. Book in for their Spa Break for Two and you’ll get a 25-minute massage on day of arrival, a three-course dinner in the 1593 Brasserie, a full breakfast the next morning and a 55-minute REN facial. The Olive Branch, Clipsham
If you prefer a cosy pub with impeccable food to a grand manor house, then get thee to The Olive Branch in Rutland for their foodie breaks. We’re planning ahead and booking their Winter Tasting Menu, Bed and Breakfast package, which is available from 1 Oct 2020 to 31 Mar 2021 and starts at £290 per room. Scoff seven seasonal courses and then stagger back to your room at The Beech House, just opposite the pub, to sleep it off.
The Ickworth, Bury St Edmunds
Whisk the kids away to this family-friendly estate to wear them out on the 1,800 acres of parkland, bike hire, swimming pool and walled gardens. The Ickworth has some good offers running currently, but our top pick is the Stay and Dine package – stay on Sunday or Thursday and spend £75 on food and beverages (easily done when Muddy’s on the case) and you’ll pay just £79 for your room. The Bird, Bath
Bath always scores highly when it comes to a staycation city break, and The Bird is absolutely one of the best places to roost in (sorry) while you visit. This quirky boutique hotel has excellent views over Bath, a new outdoor terrace bar called Popinjays and some great offers available. Book now to stay in January to March 2021 and you’ll get a free Champagne afternoon tea included in your room price. Ornithophobes need not apply.
Been under each other’s feet for months? Treat your long-suffering family to a true luxury break post-lockdown courtesy of five-star Beaverbrook.
