House beautiful! 5 chic interiors trends for 2020

New year, new decade, new home trends - time to go shopping, methinks...

It’s that time of year when we spend a lot of time hunkering down at home and with all that hunkering comes some hankering – after a little interiors update. After all, those curtains are looking a bit tired, aren’t they? Here are five chic interiors trends to zhuzh up your pad for the new decade ahead.

Warm neutrals

Interiors trends for 2020 - warm neutrals

Ring the bells, stop all the clocks, it’s official – grey is dead. After years of Silver Mist and Elephant’s Breath splashed on every wall, carpet and soft furnishing, interiors are finally warming up again. Yellow-toned shades such as oatmeal, buff and – yes – beige are back in and looking fresh for the new decade – seems Kelly Hoppen was right all along. Pair with soft accent colours like plaster pink and sage green and, bingo, your house is basically an ELLE Deco shoot location.

Japanese Scandi

We’re not quite ready to give up Scandinavian chic just yet (what would we do with all those Billy bookcases?), but this year’s minimalist interiors trend has a distinctly Eastern feel to it. Interiors buffs are coining it ‘Japandi’ – Japanese Scandi. Think bamboo furniture, silk textures, and oriental and bird prints, but with clean lines and neutral tones. Any handmade-looking pottery is a winner, too, so get booking those throwing classes.

Oceanic

Take a dip into this refreshing trend – come on in, it’s lovely! Blues and sea greens are the order of the day, especially after design behemoth Pantone dubbed Classic Blue their Colour of the Year 2020. We’re also big fans of Topps Tiles’ Tile of the Year, a fish-scale-shaped navy blue beauty that’ll give any room a nautical nod. Punctuate with bright pops of coral, fish motifs and bleached seashell textures. (Feeling blue? Read this too.)

New Art Deco

Interiors trends for 2020 - Art Deco

We know, we know, the Art Deco trend has been around for donkey’s years, but this season there are some flashy new details to sink your teeth into. There’s scalloped furniture (which has been creeping around the style sidelines for some time, but now takes centre stage with bigger and bolder designs), architectural arches and abstract artwork. We’re loving the look of reeded glass too – simply updating your light fixtures will give your 2020s home a touch of 1920s glam.

Eco

This year’s new buzzword is biophilia – no, not some weird new sex trend (though wouldn’t that be interesting), but instead the feeling of surrounding yourself with nature and natural materials. With everyone chained to their tech, it’s no wonder that we’re wanting to get back to nature – and if you’re not lucky enough to have extensive grounds to tramp around in, then eco-friendly interiors are a good alternative. Living walls, sustainable materials, raw wood and yet more pot plants are just what the doctor ordered.
