From little ankle biters to fussy teens we've got you covered this Christmas with what to buy - all from local designers, makers and stores in Herts & Beds

X marks the spot

The Muddy Award-winning Treasure Map Trails are awesome maps, hand-illustrated (by founder, Bedfordshire based dad, Dan) to encourage little ones to explore their local area (and new ones) in an exciting new way. Aimed at ages 5-12 there are now 30 locations to choose from, including four Beds towns and six Herts ones. They make perfect stocking fillers.

£6.99 each.

Cute clobber

Founder of Whistlebrook, Laura (based in Tring) creates her gorgeous handmade kids’ clothing and sewing kits from ethically sourced, sustainable materials (tick!) and they are just tooo cute. We’re big fans of this Animal Friends sweatshirt which feels just a little bit festive (but will still be easily wearable year-round). Plus its perfect for boys and girls and can be ordered from newborn size to age 8.

£20 (also available from Maggie J & Co in Tring)

Arm candy

Got a fussy teen girl in your clan? You won’t miss the mark with these pretty, yet empowering ‘Wrist rocks’ bracelets from St Albans-based jewellery-making duo, Charlie and Chesca. Pick your stone from rose quartz to black tourmaline, then personalise with the recipient’s name or mantra.

Too cool for school

They’ll be the envy of their mates at school with this Superheroes Recycled Gymsac from Beds-based clothing designer, Another Epic Day. Choose from grey, black or teal. There’s a unisex sweat to match, plus find loads of other mould-breaking cool kids’ designs on the site.

Puppet on a string

Handcrafted by a husband and wife team from Hemel Hempstead, the gorgeous Pepino Puppets are designed to work more simply than a fiddly marionette and have detachable strings so they can be played with like a soft toy too. There are lots of designs to choose from but we can’t resist Ricky the Narwhal with its rainbow horn!

T-riffic print

Looking for a nursery gift or a special keepsake with a personal touch for a little someone, check out the fab Jack and the Bean Designs. Illustrator Anneka, from Hemel Hempstead, set up her biz during lockdown and creates gorgeous prints and greetings cards full of charater and fun, that kids and adults will love equally.

Naughty list

Know someone who hasn’t been on their best behaviour, or just looking for a cheeky stocking filler? How about a lump of coal? Only joking – these fun coal-like creations are actually wildflower seed bombs, which can be soaked and planted in the garden to spread a little love come spring. They’re from Leighton Buzzard-based eco store Mimic Gifts. Gotcha there, didn’t we!

Cool colouring

Street-smart kids will love putting their stamp on these urban graphic designs. One of the many cool and crafty offerings from kooky Leighton Buzzard stationers, Happydashery.

Memories made

We love these gorgeous soft toys, which are handmade to order from your child’s outgrown clothes. They’re the creation of Henlow biz, Tracy’s Treasured Keepsakes. There are all sorts of cute animal designs to choose from, or quilted blankets if you prefer. Be aware though that there is a waiting list, and Tracy is now booking for Feb 2022, but you can pay an extra £20 for a fast track service.

Ride on

This mini maple skateboard from Happycat Kids in Letchworth is ideal for kids looking to progress at the skatepark and it’s suitable from age 3+. Plus it’s a bargain at just £15! Add an outdoor protection kit for an extra tenner to complete the package and save those grazed knees!
