Black Bridge Distillery

Hands up who’s fed up with Dry January already? Yep, us too. Then say a big howdy to St Alban’s very own moonshine maker, Black Bridge Distillery.

Created in 2017 by Ash and his fiancée, Stacey, Black Bridge Distillery was the result of a shared passion for moonshine, baby! Having sampled the USA’s finest white dog and becoming hooked on its smooth taste, so began a decade of designing, saving and a lot of sampling, until finally the distillery dream became a reality. The micro distillery ran its first bottles of moonshine off its shiny new still, affectionally named Katherine, in April 2017 to great success, and Katherine continues to produce a deliciously potent array of spirits for the lucky (squiffy) locals of Herts and Beds.

Now with two sites – one in the riverside village, Wheathampstead, and the newest one out of a converted barn on Luton Hoo Country Estate, Ash and Luke specialise in truly flavourful gins, vodkas and their beloved corn moonshines. Producing just an intsy batch of up to 200 bottles at a time, they take only the purest of cuts from their spirit run, ensuring a smooth, delish tipple. These include their Blue Admiral Gin, which changes colour when you mix it with tonic – how cool?  – and their Classic Dry and a fruity Lime and Rhubarb, if you like a bit of zing to your gin. There’s also a Green Russian Vodka, made from 100% molasses and infused with green tea, which sounds positively healthy, if you ask me.

Ash and Stacey are clearly passionate boffins in their field, constantly testing out new formulas and mixes to create incredible recipes and unique pairings that their loyal following. For a night to remember (or not, if you take too much of a shine to the moonshine), look out for one of their Gin Tasting Nights for £15. Naturally, you’ll be able to sample their spirits, but you’ll also have distillers on hand to guide you through the core ranges of gin at a level that’s understandable to both gin enthusiasts and gin geeks alike. In the meantime, you can shop online with same-day delivery if you live locally.
