Fiona Rae Goldsmith and Enameller

Muddy says: Goldsmith and enameller Fiona Rae won Best Jewellery Store in the Muddy Awards 2018. It’s hardly surprising. She holds a Royal Warrant, she’s a talented and fascinating person, and each piece of jewellery tells an interesting story.

Fiona Rae is a goldsmith and enameller who has been designing and making award-winning jewellery for over 30 years. Her story is an interesting one: she was funded by the Prince’s Trust to make her first collection, something that launched her career, and she was later granted a Royal Warrant, and today she continues to be commissioned by the Royal Family to design and make jewellery for them. Such an illustrious career deserves suitably regal premises, and Fiona’s shop and studio are perfectly located: in the Stable Yard at Hatfield House, now home to Lord and Lady Salisbury and where the Old Palace is the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth I.

With all the accolades and pomp, do not for a minute think that Fiona Rae is a lofty and hands-off designer. Quite the opposite. Everyone is welcome to pop into her shop and browse, and you can watch her at work in the studio. If you want a bespoke piece of jewellery, it is Fiona who you will meet and she will design and make your jewellery. It’s worth noting that you don’t have to be looking for precious metals that are a once in a lifetime investment. In the Stable Yard shop you will also find affordable gifts: earrings and necklaces made in silver.

Fiona loves to paint, and fine art drew her to making jewellery in vitreous enamel, an ancient craft and painstaking process. Her enamel cufflinks have been sold by Paul Smith since the 80s and are also stocked in Liberty. You can see and buy a wide range of them in Fiona’s shop.

Much of Fiona’s work is enriched by her love of the natural world which makes her location even more ideal – many of her designs are directly inspired by the trees, plants, insects and birds who share the parkland and landscaped gardens of Hatfield House.

As winner of Best Jewellery Store in the Muddy Awards 2018, I am extremely pleased to be able to recommend Fiona Rae’s work. Pop in to her shop and see for yourself.
