George IV, Great Amwell
Muddy says: Looking for a great country pub which doesn’t disappoint in the food department? This one has atmosphere and dining down to a tee.
This lovely country pub is nestled in the village of Great Amwell, near Ware in Hertfordshire.
Venture inside and not only will you find a cosy atmosphere and warm welcome, but a superb menu created with fresh and seasonal ingredients. That’s what you get when the owner is also the chef! Oliver D’Arcy’s dishes include pub classics as well as European inspired cuisine, from the George IV burger with marinated iceberg and triple cooked chips (hello!) to pot roast hake with Jerusalem artichoke and monk’s beard.
There are also some lipsmacking bar snacks such as popcorn cockles, buttermilk hot wings and marinated halloumi fries, plus Sunday roasts including lamb, beef or pork, and an intriguing sounding veggie option of BBQ salt-baked celeriac with Granny Smith and (wait for it) Marmite! (Makes a refreshing change from soggy stuffed peppers!)
To wash it all down, there’s a very decent wine list and (much to our approval) a gin menu with no fewer than 12 tipples to try.
And if you’re planning a celebration like a wedding or birthday bash, why not book George IV’s function room – it can accommodate 50 for a sit-down meal or 100 for a buffet style affair.
