Hertford Theatre, Hertford
Hertford theatre is currently undergoing a major transformation, which will bring a fantastic new arts and community hub with strong eco credentials to the town and beyond.
Locals and those who know Hertford Theatre might have noticed some changes afoot lately. The theatre, as we knew it, closed its doors in June 2021 for a humongous overhaul, which is set to not only change the face of the theatre, but of the centre of Hertford town, too.
In Spring 2021 plans were approved for the Growth and Legacy Project, which, thanks to an investment of nearly £20m, will involve three bespoke cinema screen (where you’ll be able to catch first release films), a brand new 150-seat studio theatre for smaller live acts and performances, a plaza-style foyer with riverside café-bar and a bigger main auditorium (with a new balcony and 142 extra seats) for larger productions.
There’ll be a big emphasis on community, thanks to two additional hireable community spaces for everything from yoga classes to kids’ parties. A new education and outreach department is in development too, as well as a bridge project with the Royal Opera House, to help make theatre more accessible to school children throughout East Herts.
And, being surrounded by a conservation area means that special consideration will be taken to maintain the historical and natural elements of the site, with the theatre to be a beacon of sustainability for the county. In fact the riverside area will be opened up and a walkway added, leading into town, and past Hertford’s historic Motte. Plus, the project is aiming to make Hertford Theatre a sustainability beacon, by thinking of everything from switching to electrically powered heating to serving locally sourced food in the café – can’t argue with that!
Watch this space for progress – we can’t wait to see the results.
