Sandpit Theatre

This small community theatre aims to excite young people about the arts. Its programme of events is also pretty exciting for grown ups.

When the Sandpit Theatre won Best Theatre in the Muddy Awards 2017, nobody was more surprised than the theatre team. Yet they probably shouldn’t have been surprised. It’s a popular arts venue, and people voted for the theatre they thought was the best. The Sandpit Theatre is based in the grounds of Sandringham School in St Albans, so it’s very much a community theatre. Students at the school are very involved with productions and of course friends and family come to watch their kids on stage. But that’s just part of the story. The programming here is interesting and diverse. There’s a host of live screenings: NT, Royal Opera House, and art exhibitions too. Canaletto: The Art of Venice was was screened recently, and David Hockney’s portraits are on their way. Innovative theatre companies perform here. Antigone by the Actors of Dionysus was here for two nights, and Our House, the Madness Musical, was on for three evening performances and one matinee. The auditorium has 268 seats and there’s a bar and cafe too. I urge you to check out the programme online – you’ll be surprised.
