Turvey House, Bedfordshire

Muddy says: This Grade I listed manor house on the banks of the River Ouse makes an idyllic spot to tie the knot or host your special event.

This Grade I listed country house in the pretty rural village of Turvey, is set in 150 acres of sprawling gardens and parklands on the banks of the River Great Ouse and is just minutes from central Bedford and Olney. You couldn’t find a much more idyllic spot to tie the knot or host a special celebration.

It’s still owned by the same family who built it in 1790 (and is now home to the eighth generation!), but the property was heavily re-modelled in the 1830s, which explains its neo-classical look – just check out those grand pillars and intricate stonework!

The house and grounds can be booked exclusively for events, such as food or music festivals or pop-up supper clubs, as well as weddings of course, and it’s also a popular photography and filming location (it’s been featured in fashion campaigns, documentaries and glossy mags!)

Incidentally, if you’re after a big wedding, Turvey House can accommodate several hundred guests in your choice of rustic tipi to contemporary stretch marquee on the lawn. And with the impressive manor house as your backdrop there’ll be photo ops galore! Oh and there’s a pretty walled garden, too, where your photographer can capture your special first moments as a married couple.

Although Turvey House is usually closed to the public, you can get a sneak peak around the grounds if you make it along to one of the special events held there, such as the Lunaflix outdoor cinema screenings in the summer.
