The Wee Vinoteca, Hitchin
Whether you fancy swotting up on wine, (or just drinking it!), head to this relaxed and sociable shop-cum-bar to try a selection of hand-picked varieties and some tasty dishes to match.
Cool name, but what is it? Well, a vinoteca is a Spanish word that literally means ‘a collection of wines’, although it could also be translated as a wine library (my personal favourite), but if you spotted one in Spain you’d most likely find yourself in a wine shop, or bar, or a mix of both. Confused? Allow us to explain…
The idea behind this little gem – founded by Duncan Gammie, a sommelier at a Michelin-starred restaurant in his former life – is that you can pop in and try-before-you-buy over a bite to eat in a sociable and relaxed environment. There’s a small and ever changing selection of hand-picked wines arranged by price and style, which, along with the expert advice from Duncan and his team, makes choosing your perfect tipple a doddle. The good news is you don’t have to be a wine expert, just enjoy drinking it – now that we can manage!
Oh and the ‘wee’ part is a nod to owner Duncan’s Scottish heritage, and because the bar is, well, petite in size! Check out the calendar of ‘wee workshops’, too, which include food and wine matching events, plus wine blending and cookery courses.
