How to Wear Spring Knits

Hero, over at Muddy Bucks & Oxon, totally loves Needle knitwear, and she’s been chatting to Emma Rutherford, their creative director, about Spring/Summer trends this year.  So, while we wait for the sun to come out, here are some ideas for what to wear when it does….

I bought a Needle spring jumper a few weeks ago and am just waiting for some sunshine (and, um, still waiting) before I bring it out of its lovely wrapper and show it off. If you read Muddy regularly, you might remember that I showcased the Needle SS15 range back in February. The bad news (for us, not Needle!)  is that since then it’s been flying off the shelves, and there’s already low availability on many of the ranges *sigh*. The good news is that now we know time is running out we can do something about it before it’s too late – I’m defo getting the yellow cuffed jumper (below).

Anyway, to segue slightly, I nobbled the Needle creative director Emma Rutherford the other day – easy to do as I keep bumping into her our cafe-in-common Little Italy! – on what she sees as the main knitwear trends for spring/summer. So here’s her advice on what to buy and how to wear it. Ta muchly, Emma, loving your work.

Pops of Yellow

Leave it to the most optimistic season on the calendar to show off the brighter side of life. Many designers, including us, have added an uplifting pop of yellow to their collections, ranging from lemon to mustard to a mellowed-out pastel. Check out Becky from our current Spring 15 collection with a pop of yellow on the cuffs & hem as a wearable way to get some yellow in to your wardrobe this season. Dress it up or down with a skirt or white denim for really fresh look.

Colour Blocking

If you’ve been following the spring collections you might have noticed that many designers are still very committed to colour-blocking. It was featured by Rokanda (above left) and felt fresh, mixing pastels and brights. We like to think our beautiful Needle pale grey and pink, or parchment, ice blue and cream fine knit cashmeres (above right) will keep you on trend. They are selling like crazy in Anthropologie but there are still a few online if you’re quick!

Cables

This season for a fresh look style up your cable sweater with a pencil or fluid pleated skirt. Every fashion blogger and editor has been showcasing this look this season, and it’s a sneaky way to wear your comfiest knit even more!

Feminine Style

Whether you’ve got your heart set on ruffles or find the Seventies revival there’s a feminine look for everyone. Our Spring collection is dreamy and sensual – take a peak at the scalloped knitted Tee (above) in a cool pale blue or cream silk and cotton, or our lightweight cashmere Beatrix detailed with subtle lurex. Style them with a feminine pleated skirt or be brave and jump aboard the culottes train! More than a few designers—from Céline and Stella McCartney to J. Crew – featured culottes for Spring 2015. Maybe these don’t exactly scream wearable or flattering to you (or me!), but we reckon the trick is to think of culottes as you would a more modern version of an A-line skirt. Tuck in a blouse or wear with a lightweight sweater and add a great heel, and stick to basic colours like black, navy, and ivory.
