Holiday with Poldark
The BBC bodice-ripper is back, yippee! Fancy hanging out in Poldark Land this summer? We've hunted down the best Cornish coastal cottages, villas and grand design rentals.
Everyone’s favourite period drama, Poldark, is back for series 4 this Sunday night on BBC1. It’s unlikely to have escaped your notice that there’s a lot of eye-candy on the show. Hang on, no, not that kind – I’m not some kind of pervert or anything. I’m talking about the ridiculously gorgeous Cornish locations obviously. It only takes one lingering shot of Aidan Turner on horseback, galloping along a pristine beach, wind in his tousled locks, pecs taut from an intensive topless scything session to think…. er, to think I’d really, really like to go there on my holidays.
That’s where luxury self-catering letting agency Perfect Stays comes in. They offer a deftly curated selection of chichi, high-end Cornwall properties (plus some in Devon and Somerset), ranging from a romantic cottage for two to seven bedroom whoppers suitable for big gangs of friends or several families. And happily for Poldark pervs, er, I mean fans, loads of Perfect Stays’ picks have connections to the show. So you can stand moodily on a clifftop with a faraway gaze pretending to be Demelza for an entire week if that’s what floats your boat. Here are the ones at the top of my wishlist for this summer, all of which had early summer availability at time of writing.
A charming cottage set in the rugged countryside on the edge of Bodmin Moor, Penlaurel sleeps six, has a spanking new hot tub (care to join me, Aidan?) and is very dog-friendly – the owner even prepare a special hamper for canine guests to complement the one for humans. Scenes featuring the exterior of Ross’s cottage Nampara were shot on Bodmin and a village on the moor called Warleggan provided novelist Winston Graham with the surname for Poldark baddie George.
With exquisite views across the Roseland Peninsula from its terrace, Bass Cottage is within striking distance of Charlestown, with its original Grade II listed harbour and tall ships for that historical vibe. It has four bedrooms, a terrace and chic, modern décor that’s definitely not 18thcentury.
Bodillian on Praa Sands (above) sleeps eight and is another one with epic ocean views. It’s also got a built-in BBQ and outdoor fridge on the terrace for all your sun-downer needs. If you can bring yourselves to leave, it’s a short drive to the National Trust-run Gunwalloe beach on The Lizard, where Poldark’s shipwreck scenes were filmed.
Also don’t miss Predannack Wollas, the wild, windswept headland which has seen plenty of Poldark horseback action.
It’s a crowded field but I think this may just be my favourite. How insanely beautiful is this house, below? That’s what I call a room with a view.
Gwel An Treth is what you’re looking at here, and it sleeps ten, with views over Sennen Cove. A Brucy Bonus? It’s close to the mines on the West Coast – Botallack, Levant and Geevor – which feature in the show.
Or how about this bright, airy 4 bedroom house Tregully?
I love the massive open plan living area, and it’s in a spot-on location in Constantine Bay, north Cornwall – a five minute walk brings you to one of the county’s best surfing beaches. Prefer horseriding to riding the waves? Nearby Park Head, Bedruthan Steps and Porthcothan beach have all been galloped across sultrily by Mr Poldark himself.
You can walk to Holywell bay from the modern, stylish Trewhella (above) – it’s just steps to the immaculate, broad, sandy beach, backed with grassy dunes, has seen many a horseback run-in between Ross, Demelza and George. The house is in Crantock, sleeps 10-12, has five bedrooms and is slick in style. History buffs can get their fill from the 6thcentury church and the 400-year-old pub in the village, both of which make Poldark with its 18th century setting look positively modern.
Let me know if you decide to book one. And of course Poldark isn’t the only string to Cornwall’s bow – don’t forget to check out Muddy Cornwall for a primer on all the local fun stuff. Happy holidays!
