Beautiful inside, beautiful outside…

Lots of treatments claim to be ‘holistic’ – but coming across a therapist who properly combines the internal and the external in a completely integrated way is a bit of a rarity.  I had a couple of sessions recently with Joy Salem, who does just that, and I’m still feeling the benefits – inside and out.

The first thing you notice about Joy is her astonishing skin.  I would give my firstborn (no, not really….) to have skin like hers – especially (and I hope she won’t mind you telling me this) when I’m in my 70s.  She’s almost certainly her own best advertisement in that respect.

Joy brings years of experience in a variety of fields to bear on everything she does – she used to practise at the Hale Clinic in London, and works with facial manipulation, EFT, Theta healing, chakra balancing, kinesiology, flower remedies, as well as her genuine and very loving interest in people and their stories.  I found myself telling Joy just about everything about myself, even some things I didn’t even really know about myself, and feeling uncharacteristically comfortable doing it.

I booked in for two sessions with Joy after meeting her, and arrived at both not really knowing what to expect.  And that’s as it should be.  Joy genuinely tailors the treatments you receive to how you’re doing – inside and out – that day, that moment, and will change what she’s doing as the treatment goes on in order to give you the maximum benefit.

Trying to describe what she does, then, is pretty much impossible – and I’m someone who describes things for a living, for pete’s sake.  Every treatment anywhere, if it’s any good, starts with the therapist ‘finding out a bit about you’ – but that bit is absolutely key with Joy, and I really felt like she was getting under my skin (in a good way) as we talked.  She believes wholeheartedly that how you feel on the inside is reflected in how you look on the outside – that happy faces are beautiful faces – and so won’t ever start sorting out the top layer until she’s got a good sense of what’s going on below the surface.

Joy offers non-surgical facelifts – she jokes about how she loves ‘pulling faces’ – as well as Ultratone treatments, which work on the face and body at the same time.  I came away looking noticeably different – more toned, better nourished, clearer skinned – and the effects lasted.  All the time she’s working on you, she’s talking with you, getting feedback about what’s happening, how comfortable (or not) you are with what she’s doing, and so she can adapt what she’s doing depending on how well it’s working.  She’s engaged, hands-on, very present – and will give you a hug if any of the emotional bits and pieces get a bit much.

Nothing she does will be a quick treatment.  And that’s one of the brilliant things about what she does – I didn’t feel rushed or short-changed at all.  Joy takes the time she needs with each client, and you get a rather lovely sense of her having all the time in the world to focus on you.  So luxurious….

So, yes, properly holistic and potentially transformative on a physical and an emotional level.  And like nothing I’ve ever come across before — at least not all in one person, one therapist, and all at the same time.  One of those things that, really, honestly, you just have to experience for yourself.
