Tring’s cake artist

Whether you’re into medieval fantasy or naked sponge with whipped buttercream, Sherry Hostler is your woman. There are bakers and there are artists. Sherry is a well swirled mixture of both.

With a degree in sports science, Sherry eschewed a career in marketing and a ‘beige’ office in order to bring some colour into her life. And now she makes cakes that win her awards.

Sherry is impressive and great to chat to. I met her for tea and cake in her brand new workshop in Wilstone, near Tring. She’s based near a farm shop, where she’s in good company. Her neighbours are Puddingstone Gin.

Sherry has just gone into our Little Black Book where you can read more about her and see more of her cakes. If you’re planning a significant birthday party this year, or any other celebration, Sherry offers consultations at her home in Tring. From our conversation I realised that however wild and out there your cake dreams might be, Sherry will rise to the challenge. And does she have any predictions for wedding cakes this year? ‘Naked wedding cakes with sponge and buttercream.’ Will that be a good fit with hay bales and rustic locations? Absolutely, agrees Sherry.

Sherry’s cakes have been featured in a clutch of magazines. Her creations have graced pedestals at weddings and other celebrations at Luton Hoo, Shendish Manor and Waddesdon Manor. She even made a cake for Miranda Hart. She’s one busy baker.

Now that Sherry has got her own workshop, she is offering courses and masterclasses. Coming up on Thurs 9 Feb is Don’t Break My Heart, where you can make and decorate biscuits for your beloved.

Looking further ahead, you could do the Cupcake Bouquet Course in March. Workshop numbers are limited to 7, so you’ll get all the attention you need to succeed. Sadly, no chance of hiding at the back of the class with any bodged biscuits.
