The Oscars: 5 unmissable moments

Hot off the press from Muddy HQ: As you might just have noticed, last night was the 89th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The movie industry’s finest got glammed up, came, saw and conquered… or, at least, thought they’d conquered but then realised someone had a made a humdinger of a boo-boo (more of which shortly). No time to read up extensively on the finer detail of the biggest, glitziest night on the showbiz calendar? Ta-da – here’s Muddy’s two-minute Oscars digest…

Someone had a very bad day at the office. The Worst.

Imagine the biggest mistake you’ve ever made at work – losing a client, photocopying your bum at the office Christmas party, shagging the boss – and then multiply it by three billion and imagine broadcasting it live on TV. You’ve got to feel sorry for the PricewaterhouseCoopers accountants in charge of the Oscar ballot official count who handed Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway the wrong envelope before they announced the Best Picture winner. They said it was La La Land, it was actually Moonlight. Cue utter confusion, live on TV. Next year’s Best Picture? We’re predicting The Wrong Envelope, a heart-rending tale of what happens when your worst stress dream becomes reality.

The voters finally got the diversity memo

After the controversy of recent years’ nominations including so few people of colour, last night’s ceremony suggested the Academy is finally adopting a more inclusive worldview. Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress for Fences. This 1950s-set movie unpicks the troubled life of a middle-aged family man (Denzel Washington), who once dreamed of being a baseball player at a time when major leagues didn’t allow black players. And Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight, the Best Picture winner (eventually) about growing up black and gay in a rough part of Miami. Ali plays the protagonist’s unlikely drug-dealing mentor and makes history as the first Muslim to win an acting Oscar. It’s been a pretty memorable week for Ali – his wife gave birth just four days ago. Recognize that face? He memorably played smooth political operator Remy Danton in POTUS TV drama House Of Cards.

Boobs were big (in both senses)

The wrong envelope faux-pas wasn’t the only boob of the night. Oh no. After a few seasons of demure, buttoned up, midi-dresses, Hollywood has re-embraced cleavage with gusto. All the Kates – Hudson, Upton and Bosworth – and Amy Adams put on what the Daily Mail would call a “busty display”, while Ryan Gosling’s date for the night, his sister Mandi, chose a frock that meant she wouldn’t  be overshadowed by her superstar sibling. Well, if you’ve got it flaunt it, we say.

Nicole Kidman has yet to master the act of clapping

You can’t accuse Muddy of ignoring the important news issues of the day. One of the biggest talking points of the Oscars was Nicole Kidman’s very strange applauding. She may be an Oscars and Hollywood veteran and was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in Lion… but she claps like a toddler. Or a seal. Muddy has two theories: she’d borrowed horrifically expensive rings and didn’t want to damage them. Or she’d left the house with wet nail polish (been there, done that, sister).

There’s a lot of great films you can catch up on RIGHT NOW

The nice thing about this year is that one single film didn’t dominate the proceedings. Yes, La La Land won six gongs, but that still left room for a raft of other thought-provoking movies to shine. And what’s even better is that many of them are showing in UK cinemas this week, so grab some popcorn, get involved and see what all the fuss is about. Our picks include Best Picture winner Moonlight (“a flat-out masterpiece” says Rolling Stone), ’50s-set family drama Fences, Hidden Figures (about a group of African-American female NASA mathematicians), and the extraordinary Lion. That’s the one with Dev Patel about a little Indian boy who gets separated from his family and ends up living in Australia. It’s deeply moving and will make you cry forever. Although not as long as the people who gave out the wrong envelope…
