What’s On: Muddy Herts Guide 1-7 Dec 2016

Definite festive flavour to what’s on this week — although there’s plenty else going on if you’re feeling a bit on the ‘bah, humbug’ side.  I know it’s chilly, and getting even chillier this weekend, but bundle up and head on out there!

Winter House at All in One Season, Letchworth, various dates

winter-house

There are some tickets left for the astonishingly gorgeous Dutch Winter House at All in One Season in Letchworth. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen — Alice opens her home to literally hundreds of people who browse the gifts and decorations in the beautifully-decorated house and the courtyard lit by twinkling lights.  Seriously — do not miss this one.

the-brief

Join David’s Bookshop to hear Ampthill author Simon Michael talk about the first books in his new series of crime thrillers, set in the streets, courts and prisons of 1960s London. And this guy really knows his stuff, practising as a barrister for over 30 years –  he must have seen all sorts! Expect themes of morality, alienation and displacement, as morally compromised anti-hero barrister, Charles Holborne, tries to find his way through the corrupt police force and street gangs.

Cake Decorating Classes, River Room, Hertford Theatre, 4 Dec, 10am-12pm & 2-4pm

cake-decs-hertford

How cute do these cake decorations look?! Not to mention tasty…although of course, they’re far too cute to eat. Maybe. If you need a topper for your Christmas cake, how about letting the lovelies at Hertford Theatre help you along your way. If you’re more of a Santa and Rudolph kinda gal, go to the session at 10am, and if penguins are more your thing (see the adorable depiction above) then head over at 2pm.  You can even take kids, too — should you want to.

Christmas Gothic, The Old Town Hall, Hemel Hempstead, 2 Dec, 8pm

xmas-gothic

Christmas time is ghostie time.  Or it is at The Old Town Hall, anyway! This production resurrects Victorian tradition by presenting three tales of terror to get you in the Christmas spirit. Lighting a candle to the frailties of human nature and illuminating the chilling depths of the bleak winter (oo-er), Christmas is a time to remember the past, celebrate the present and look to the future. Great reviews for this one, with particular praise for the way this young performer really holds the audience in the palm of her hand.

We Haven’t Got a Cluedo, Abbey Theatre, 3 & 4 Dec, 8pm & 2.30pm

havent-got-a-cluedo

Based on the popular board game, this production brings to life all the favourite characters and even gives the audience the chance to help solve the crime. So if you fancy yourself as a bit of a Professor Plum, this may be the play for you. Colonel Mustard with the pistol in the drawing room…?  I like to think of myself as more of a Miss Scarlet, if the truth be known.
