What’s On: Muddy Herts Guide, 20-26 Aug 2015
Suddenly, there are open-air cinemas popping up everywhere. Why is that, given that it rains all the flippin’ time in this neck of the woods? Hey-ho. I’ve got my fingers crossed for clear skies, given that a couple of them – check them out below – look great. And you wait ages for a classic car festival and then, well I never, two come along at once…
Open Air Cinema: ‘Back to the Future,’ Hertford Castle, 22 Aug, 19.30
Remember how cute little Marty McFly was back in the day? Well, that was – brace yourself – 30 years ago. Get yourself back-to-the-future once more with an open-air anniversary screening of the Michael J. Fox classic. Take your kids, maybe, and try explaining all those 80s references in between mouthfuls of popcorn…
Open Air Cinema: ‘Grand Budapest Hotel,’ Hatfield House, 27 Aug, gates open 6.30pm
Or, if you fancy a more grown-up cinematic treat in the great outdoors, check out ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ on the big screen at Hatfield House. I loved this film when Mr C and I saw it at the Odyssey in St Albans, and I’m definitely tempted to grab a blanket and picnic – and Mr C, of course – and head over to see it again.
‘Paddington,’ Chilming Outdoor Cinema, Stanstead Abbots, 28 Aug, 7.30pm
From the forests of Darkest Peru to the woods of deepest Hertfordshire, here comes Paddington. Bring a blanket, a picnic – marmalade sandwiches, of course – and a thermos full of hot chocolate, and curl up under the stars. Sounds positively lovely. Get your tickets here. And what’s ‘chilming,’ you ask? It’s chilling and watching a film. Perfect.
Groove is the Heart: Clubbing with the Kids, Hitchin, 22 Aug
Get your summer groove on – and encourage your kids to do the same – at a tropical beach party-themed afternoon of classic club anthems for the whole family. There’ll be an outdoor chill-out beach, sand art, limbo (how low can you go?), ice pops, mocktails, the lot. Sounds like a riot. Pick up your tickets from Jolly Brown, Farley’s or Hermitage Rd in Hitchin – or email [email protected] for more info.
Woodside Hall, Walsworth Road, Hitchin, SG4 9SP
Ferrari Festival, Berkhamsted, 23 Aug, 11.30am-4pm
Like your flash cars? Berkhamsted is going to be positively awash with them this weekend with a Grand Parade of Ferraris through the town. There’ll also be the Belgian Grand Prix on a giant screen, gelati, an Italian market and a bar. Head down to the Castle Street Campus to join in the fun. (And while you’re down that way, pop into Luxe 22 – lots of gorgeous things to lust over.) You can also book a space as a passenger in the parade – or to have your name decorating one of the classic cars. Sounds like fun if four fancy wheels are your sort of thing.
Tewin Classic Car and Craft Show, 23 Aug
And if you’re into your cars – but not near Berkhamsted – you could enjoy the Tewin Classic Car and Craft Show instead. They’re expecting 400 cars, and there’ll be 40 craft stalls too.
