What’s On: Muddy Herts Guide 8-14 Oct 2015

Don’t let the Autumn rain put you off – there’s loads going on out and about this weekend, and even a bit of sun in the forecast (blink and you’ll miss it, though).  Art, comedy, chocolate – what more could you want?

Hertford Food and Drink Festival, 9-11 Oct

 hertford f and d

All sorts of gastronomic details coming up at this weekend’s Food and Drink Festival in Hertford – demonstrations, tastings, markets, competitions and more.  McMullen’s brewery will be open and offering tours, there’s a Beer festival in the Castle grounds, and there are all sort of foodie goings-on throughout the town.

Hardeep Singh Kholi: Big Mouth Strikes Again, The Old Town Hall, Hemel Hempstead, 10 Oct, 8pm

Hardeep Singh Kholi (who you’ll definitely know if you listen to Radio 4) is taking his show ‘Big Mouth Strikes Again’ that premiered at Edinburgh this year on tour – and stopping in Hemel on the way.  (Did you know, the word for heaven in Dutch is ‘hemel’?  Today’s interesting fact for you.)   I love listening to him on the radio, so very curious to see what he’d be like live.

Apple Day, Tewin Orchard, 11 Oct, 12-4.30pm

You know it’s Autumn for real when the Apple Days start cropping up – and the one at Tewin Orchard looks like a lovely one to pick.  Lots of apple-themed loveliness, a barbeque, activities for the kids – sounds deliciously crunchy and good for you.  Remember, an apple a day….

The Cambridge Glass Fair, Knebworth, 11 Oct, 10.30am-4pm

 mg 19 02 glass

This is the second year that the Cambridge Glass Fair will be coming to Knebworth, and they’re bringing all sorts of glass with them – seriously, I had no idea this was such a big thing.  There will be more than 70 exhibitors, with glass from all sorts of periods and styles from medieval to modern, Georgian, Art Noveau, modernist, you name it.   There’ll be some just to look at and some to buy – as well as glassblowing demonstrations (I would secretly love to have a go at that).

Milton Jones and the Temple of Daft, Gordon Craig Theatre, Stevenage, 10 Oct, 8pm

 milton jones

I’m not a huge Milton Jones fan – in fact, I tend to switch channels if he comes on the telly – but Mr C thinks he’s hilarious, as do lots of other people.  Bit of a Marmite one, I reckon.  Anyway, if he is your cup of tea, you can catch him in Stevenage this weekend with his show ‘The Temple of Daft.’ Enjoy…

The Mousetrap, Alban Arena, St Albans, 12-17 Oct, 7.30pm

I’ve not seen ‘The Mousetrap’ – which has to be pretty good going seeing as I love going to the theatre and it’s been running for 60 years with more then 25,000 performances.  And now, ‘The Mousetrap on Tour’ is coming to St Albans, so I really have no excuse.  It’s a classic Christie mystery – group of characters stuck in a country house, someone gets murdered, and everyone’s under suspicion until the nail-biting conclusion.  Whodunnit?   No clue.

Tring 700 Exhibition, [email protected], opens 9 Oct

Tring has been celebrating its 700th birthday this year with all sorts of goings on, and the Natural History Museum in town is joining in with the opening of the Tring 700 Photo Exhibition this weekend.  It includes winning entries from this year’s photographic competition, as well as a treasure trove of archival shots of the town and area.  And while you’re there, the museum itself is a great place for an afternoon of mooching around and staying out of the rain.  And it’s free, which is a bonus.

Salon du Chocolat, The Old Town Hall, Hemel Hempstead, 14 Oct, 8pm

An evening of chocolate and storytelling, bringing together the two in an intimate salon-style setting – with songs, performance and readings all dripping with mouth-watering references to chocolate and its very particular pleasures.  Sounds delicious.  In fact, just the thought of it has me hankering for a bar of Dairy Milk….

Pop-Up Art Exhibition, Harpenden, 9-18 Oct

 Two necklaces

Just heard about this one.  Local artists Justine Lois Thorpe and Anna Perlin will be joined by jeweller Kate Wilkinson for a pop-up exhibition in Harpenden.  Gorgeous things to look at – and buy.  Definitely worth a peek if you’re in the area or passing through.
