10 places to get active (if you hate the gym…)

Not a fan of the treadmill or pumping iron in a sweaty gym? Get your adrenalinehit and get fit without noticing (you’ll be having too much fun!) at one of these high-energy activity centres... and they're all local, too!

Bouncing around like a loony on a trampoline isn’t just fun for kids, y’know, (although if you’re after a fun family activity, this’ll definitely put you in the good books with those bored tweens). Trampolining is BIG news in the adult fitness world, too. Just think how many calories you could burn doing a workout on a bouncy surface! Wobbly bits, begone!

Jump City UK, Cheshunt

Where to give it a go: JumpCity UK in Cheshunt, Herts, has 33 adjoining trampolines to bounce yourself across, a cardio zone and a ninja area, plus (if you’re feeling that adrenaline high) a 2-metre air bag tower! At around a tenner for an hour, that sounds like a whole lot of bounce for your buck! They also run their Ablitzeration Fat burning Boot-camp, if you get the bug.

Over in Luton, Beds, Orbital Trampoline Park boasts a whopping 41,000 square feet of the bouncy stuff. You’ll find Gladiator-style battle beams, foam pits, dodgeball and Slamdunk courts and tonnes more to explore in the Open Jump sessions (£9-£10/hour), as well as occasional fitness classes.

Also check out: Jump In, Elstree and Gosling Trampoline and Play Park in Welwyn Garden City, where you can join the kids for an Open Jump session to get the blood pumping!

Got a head for heights? Then climbing could just be your new thing! Don’t worry, we’re not suggesting you go suspend yourself from a rocky outcrop in the middle of nowhere (yet!), just head to one of these indoor climbing walls to try it for size – it’ll do wonders for your upper body strength!

Where to give it a go:

Twinwoods Adventure, just north of Bedford, is a multi-activity centre including a 6m climbing wall with different routes to the top, varying in difficulty. You can even challenge your mates or your own PB (as you improve) with a race to the top, Gladiator-style!

Oh and why not have a go at indoor surfing while you’re there… come again?! No, really – there’s an actual machine that creates a wave so you you can perfect your technique before getting out in the big blue!

The XC Jarman Park

Also check out: Gravity Rocks in Milton Keynes, a climbing extension of the already hugely popular trampoline centre, with multiple styles and skill levels of walls to scale at your leisure.

Missed out on hitting the slopes this season and craving a hit of the white stuff? Or just fancy having a go without forking out for a second mortgage first? For a full body workout and a rush while you’re at it try these indoor snow domes for size.

Snow Centre, Hemel Hempstead

Where to try it:

Head to the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead to try a ski or snowboarding lesson (there are ladies-only lessons on Weds mornings), book a ski pass if you already know the ropes or unleash your inner big kid on the Ringo slide (like sledging on a doughnut!) It costs from £29 for an hour’s worth of runs, or you can buy a membership which gets you 30% off!

Also check out: Snozone Milton Keynes, the largest real snow indoor centre in Europe.

If you love a challenge and want to push yourself to the limit, extreme sports tick the boxes, and will gain you some proper street cred, but you don’t have to jump straight in at the deep end – everyone’s got to start somewhere. Dip your toe in at these local hang outs.

The XC Jarman Park

Where to try it: The XC at Jarman Park in Hemel Hempstead is your one-stop shop for extreme sports. There’s a skatepark (for BMX bikes, skateboards and roller blades) with Friday night girls’ only sessions, a climbing and bouldering wall, a 12m high ropes course AND (claustrophobics need not apply) Europe’s largest indoor caving facility – you can take the kids, too for a private family caving session.

Ninja Warrior UK

Also check out: If you’ve seen the TV show, Ninja Warrior, where contestants battle it out to complete the obstacle course in the fastest time, why not see what you’re made of and give it a go yourself at Ninja Warrior UK in Watford?
