Oh la la!
Say bonjour to Sézane, your new favourite French fashion brand. Click this way and I'll tell you more, ma cherie.
You know when you love something so much you don’t want to tell everyone else about it because it’s your secret squirrel special thing? That’s kind of how I feel about super-cool online French fashion brand, Sézane. Plus I don’t want to bump into you all wearing the same jumper as me, obviously. But being a journalist, I’m an inveterate blabbermouth so I’ve decided to share the love and explain exactly why j’adore this cult label – and I think you will too.
1. The handbags
I mean, just look at them. If you’re going to buy one thing from Sézane, head straight for the handbags. The chic, minimal designs are exquisitely made, with an emphasis on craftsmanship. With your purchase, you get a little pot of restoring balm to keep your new baby well nourished. My first foray into Sézane was the cross-body Héritage Victor bag in classic black but I also wouldn’t say non to the bottle green version.
Or how about this tan bucket bag? Come to mama!
And if you’ve got a lot of junk to lug around (always), this one will fit a laptop and more.
2. It’s not horrifically expensive
Bags this beautiful must cost a packet, I hear you cry. Well, actually no. For a designer brand, it’s very well priced, on a par with the high end of the high street, such as Whistles and Jigsaw. The bags are around £200, while knitwear is £80-ish and T shirts start around £35.
3. The brand founder is a good egg
Morgane Sézalory, the chic Parisian (but of course – have you ever seen a scruffy one?) who founded the brand in 2013, has launched a philanthropic programme, Demain, which last year raised 1.2m Euros for under-privileged children. Limited edition pieces are released on the 21st of each month, with the profits going to the charity. She’s also making great strides with sustainability (there’s loads of detail on the site) – making products built to last, taking steps to replace the traditional bag leather tanning process with less polluting vegetable tanning and reducing the use of synthetic materials in garments. It’s good to see a brand walking the walk as well as talking the talk.
4. They’ve made jumpers cool
Sweaters aren’t traditionally the most thrilling of clothing purchases but Sézane’s knits are dreamy, heck, I’d go so far as to say they’re sexy. Yes, a sexy sweater – you heard it hear first. I have a gorgeous green jumper peppered with petits pom poms (sadly no longer in stock) that garners at least one compliment on every outing and there’s plenty more where that came from – take a look at these woolly wonders.
5. I want to live in their London shop, basically
…Or “L’Appartement” as they call it, naturellement. The pop-up boutique opened at 233 Westbourne Grove in West London last September but shows no sign of popping off any time soon. It’s such a gorgeous shopping experience – the interiors! (parquet flooring, velvet sofas, wooden sideboards, antique rugs). The utterly charming Parisian staff! (I know, no one was more surprised than me). And, the best bit: the diddy French patisseries to nibble while you shop! I’ll be taking my sleeping bag next time.
