Gotta have it

And the Autumn Golden Glow award goes to . . . Staffy B in Baldock!

This Burst of Gold tree tea light holder caught my eye this week in the wonderfully quirky and deliciously stylish interiors and gift shop Staffy B. If you don’t know it, I suggest you make a special trip. It’s on Baldock High Street, and it jumps out at you. Great signage and a constantly changing and consistently beautiful window. Staffy B is run by Hayley and Toni, both designers, who have now set the bar high for independent retailers in Baldock and I wonder who will be next? I was lucky enough to interview Hayley last month, and I also went to their fab Christmas preview night, which raised over £1,000 for Breast Cancer Care. Last week, my eyes were drawn to this glass matt black and glittery gold number, which is bigger than your average tea light holder, perhaps 12mm, and is a natty £10. I thought ‘I’ll have one of those,’ only to realise that I’d actually bought a smaller version at the Christmas preview night. So there you have it.

Gold is the colour at the moment. I would say that it’s all the rage, but that makes me sound like someone in a 1930s film. Chatting to Toni and Hayley I found out that while we associate autumn with russety and coppery shades (and Staffy B has got some stunning copper gifts in store at the moment), gold is something of a salve during uncertain times. Gold = optimism. It’s synonymous with wealth, warmth and wonder. I’m thinking of the Three Kings, Terry’s All Gold and the golden ones in Quality Street. So ditch the guilt, and embrace the gilt. And I’ll stop right there, before I get carried away.

To be honest, I just wanted a reason (not that I needed one) to tell you about Staffy B. It has such a lovely feel, that while I was only there to hand over the Little Black Book sticker to Hayley and Toni, I ended up outstaying my welcome. You’ll see what I mean when you visit. At the back of the shop is a small studio where you can chat, look at samples and swatches of glorious fabrics, and Hayley and Toni offer all kinds of services and advice, and can create mood boards, upholster a cocktail chair (and they sell them too), and probably transform your whole house. This is what I’m dreaming will happen for me one day. But in the meantime, one of their regulars said that their Christmas shop reminded them of Liberty; and they’ve also got a great selection of vinyl and wonderful decorations and gifts. And feather Christmas trees!
