About

sandra

Hello readers of Muddy Herts! I’m Sandra and I’ve been a journalist for over 20 years, originally in London but now back in my home county, Hertfordshire.

My first ever published article was about my shoes, although I have to confess, I was writing about how Birkenstocks perked up my posture. But then I did go on to write a little book about Stilettos…

Over the last two decades I have been lucky enough to write features on food, travel, gardens and design for the Independent on Sunday, Guardian, Observer, Financial Times, Vogue Food + Travel and Gardens Illustrated.

I’ve also worked in retail design and brand development and that might explain why I always have my eyes peeled for an intriguing and independent business.

Maybe that’s why I like Muddy Stilettos! The blog tottered into the world in 2012 over in Bucks/Oxon, where Founder and national journo Hero Brown was struggling to find fun stuff to do in the area. She decided to research it herself and the blog was born. Four years on and Muddy Stilettos is now in 17 English counties, providing an indispensable local guide to the very best restaurants, walks, boutiques, day trips, hotels, interiors and events. There are now over 150,000 Muddy readers who trust our blogs to deliver the very best their county has to offer. And did I mention awards?  The industry likes us, too. Muddy Stilettos won Most Innovative Blog at the UK National Blog Awards 2015, was runner up in the same category in 2016 and was also voted Top 3 Lifestyle Blogs in the UK in both 2014 and 2015. Plus we’re currently Finalists in Best Arts and Culture blog for the UK 2017!

For me, since leaving the Smoke for Hertfordshire, it’s so exciting to see how many good things are opening up right on my doorstep and across the county. Herts seems to be attracting a whole host of creative people with increasingly good ideas.

I can’t wait to share these finds with you. And please do get in touch. I’d love to hear from you. [email protected]os.co.uk

This is the Muddy Mantra, so you know what to expect from the blog:

  1. I try everything out myself so that you can fully trust my opinions. On the occasions that I haven’t been somewhere myself (for example, an event that hasn’t happened yet – um, I’m not a miracle worker) I let you know about it.
  2. I don’t write advertorial. This means I will never accept payment to write about something I don’t believe in.
  3. I accept tickets to free shows, festivals, restaurants, events etc with the purpose of reviewing or publicising them on Muddy Stilettos Herts, as I’m sure you appreciate it’s pretty expensive zipping around trying stuff out all the time. Hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars – if you want me to try you out, please get in touch at [email protected] or via twitter @muddyherts
  4. I’ll never write a nasty review. I’m not into trashing people, brands or companies. BUT if you’re not good enough, I will not write about you in Muddy Stilettos, regardless of whether I have paid for the experience or not. This gives me the editorial control I need and the trust that my readers demand.

I hope you love the blog. Please tell your friends about it, and sign up for my splendiferous free posts delivered to your inbox to be the first to know about all the cool stuff happening in your area!

Muddy Stilettos is a commercial blog and as such accepts advertising. However, we believe passionately in only working with brands that share our ethos and are relevant to our readers. We retain editorial control and independence at all times.
