Top places to live in Hertfordshire Harpenden

This lovely town is built for those who enjoy the finer things in life. The connections to London are stratospherically fast, and it's packed with great pubs, restaurants and independent shops. Oh, and there's a Space NK. Sold? Top 200 Places to Live series.

Harpenden is a great little town, with a very pretty Georgian centre, cricket green, upmarket high street shops, cute independents, great schools and a sense of class (there must be more SUVs per capita here than anywhere else on the planet. Lol..). It almost feels like a big village in the midst of gorgeous rolling Hertfordshire fields, but with useful shops and fast connections to London.

There’s a Costa AND a Caffé Nero, but there are also independent caffeine specialists, such as 8oz Coffee, Parker & Vine. Great pubs include The Harpenden Arms and The Silver Cup, looking over the Common. There are also quite a few cool independent restaurants, of which I’d recommend: Okka Cafe, Tabure, Yard (for pizza), The George for brunch, and Sarakh – amazing south Indian in nearby Southdown.

You really are spoiled in Harpenden from a luxury chain point of view, with M&S Food, Waitrose and even Space NK, Mint Velvet and Jo Jo Maman Bebé. But there are also some great independents: Threads – for gifts, nik naks and cards, Harpenden Books, Perry Florists, Stephanie Randall – The Flower Studio, independent butchers R & M, Tomaka Spirits Boutique, MAP Stores, Tag Furniture, MUST Wine, and Handmade in Harpenden, to name but a few…

If you’re into golf, there’s not one but three courses: Aldwickbury Park Golf club, Harpenden Common Golf Club and Harpenden Golf Course all within putting distance. And, if you fancy a ramble, Batford Springs Nature Reserve is close by.

Are you ready for this? The AVERAGE price of a house in Harpenden is just shy of £800k. I did tell you it’s a nice place. But there are some great terraces that come on the market around the £500k price point.

Four bed Grade II-listed cottage in a village location, just a few miles from Harpenden centre, £750,000

Harpenden is humming with independents, including St Hilda’s (girls’ prep with a co-ed nursery) and Aldwickbury (boys’ prep), as well as St George’s (co-ed senior), The King’s School (co-ed, 4-16yrs),

It’s got to be Harpenden Public Halls – a 400-seat theatre space presenting live music, comedy, theatre, and, of course, the not-to-be-missed annual Christmas Panto.

33 miles. Thameslink trains take just over 25 minutes to St Pancras (And you are pretty likely to get a seat, unlike the unfortunate souls who pile on at St Albans).
