Stanley Kubrick’s former home, Abbots Mead, is a grand nine-bedroom Victorian property located on Barnet Lane, Elstree and it’s immediately obvious why Kubrick loved it. Not only is it a short hop and skip away from Elstree Film Studios it’s also blissfully private. Set over 2.38 acres, inside is spacious and rather delightfully frou-frou. Think ornate cornicing, high ceilings and feature fireplaces.

Kubrick lived here with his family for 14 years (1965 to 1979) while editing and working on iconic films including 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shining.

He worked from home much of the time, and when he wasn’t deep in a film project, we imagine he made full use of the expansive garden. Outside, there’s a heated swimming pool, a sauna, two greenhouses, and a wonderful orchard.

And that’s not all. There’s also a handy detached four-bedroom lodge, complete with two bathrooms and its own separate garden — ideal for visiting friends, family, or when you just want a little bit of your own private space to plot the next cinematic masterpiece.

And here’s one final fact: the house was previously owned by Eric Cowell. Yes — that Cowell. Music mogul Simon Cowell grew up here, before the property was sold by his dad, Eric, to Kubrick in 1965. Great twist, right?
