<p>Originally a dairy farm, Tewinbury has grown into a four-star hotel, restaurant, wedding and music venue set in the Hertfordshire countryside. It’s large but self-contained with a range of accommodation on offer (from river lodges to shepherd’s huts). Some of the rooms also have their own patios and a few have access to their own delightful hot tub. </p>

<p>This is a family business with a friendly, independent character and is today run by the Williams clan whose aim is to create a place where guests can reconnect with nature. And happily, there is plenty of nature to connect with, from footpaths and cycle paths around the farm, to river and woodland walks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

<p>Tewinbury Farm has been a working farm since 1931 but over the years barns have been converted and rooms have been added. The original farmhouse is now the reception area &#8211; it is all wooden flooring, roaring fire and beautiful sash windows. The Cowshed restaurant (where they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner) was the farm’s original cowshed but today, instead of herds, there is contemporary décor, booth seating and sociable round tables. </p>

<p>Other foodie spaces include the Granary Kitchen (the farm’s original chicken shed) and The Stable, a piano bar and lounge with a riverside terrace. These are not big bustly restaurants. Instead, each space has its own distinct feel. There&#8217;s also a cookery school, cinema room, and two wedding venues on-site. And if you want a big old party with live music and street food, then the open-air Farm Yard is the place for you.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pillow-talk">PILLOW TALK</h2>

<p>We stayed in the Oak Barn located close to reception. Set over two floors, it featured a downstairs super-king size bed and living area with TV and proper coffee machine plus a spacious en-suite bathroom with huge tub, shower and ambient lighting. To our delight, there were plenty of fluffy towels and gorgeous toiletries to enjoy too. As this was a dog-friendly room (there are 10 in total) it also came with a snug bed for our pup. From here, a staircase led up to a gorgeously cosy mezzanine level featuring twin beds. Neutral tones, wooden beams and warm furnishings made it homely, cosy and a great zone for the kids.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-and-quaff">SCOFF AND QUAFF</h2>

<p>The Cowshed was our venue of choice for dinner. A lovely barn-like, low-lit space it offered a simple but tasty menu. Options included local Tewin lamb, steak, and courgette lasagne with everything seasonal and homemade with herbs and veg from the Tewins Green garden. We opted for cowshed hummus to start with and Tewinbury sourdough and olives. They were polished off in seconds!</p>

<p>A burger with cheddar, tomato and bacon relish with an extra side helping of rosemary salted chips followed while my partner had the mushroom wellington. The kids chose from the children’s menu and tucked into steaming plates of pasta. The food was hearty and portions were generous but somehow we found room for pud. The children were delighted by the chocolate cake and ice cream while we shared a plate of British cheeses and a cheeky lemon posset. All very indulgent and tasty!</p>

<p>Despite the huge feast, the next day we returned to The Cowshed for a full-on buffet breakfast. There were plenty of hot ingredients (scrambled eggs, hash browns, tomatoes, and mushrooms) plus fruit, yoghurt and cereals all washed down with excellent coffee and a choice of fruit juices.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-out-amp-about">OUT &amp; ABOUT</h2>

<p>This is prime walking and cycling country with scenic trails and woodlands galore. The Mimram river runs right through the farm’s land and there’s also an on-site nature reserve. Kids will love the farm animals (there are cows, sheep and alpacas on-site) but if you want to walk off some off that food, venture further afield and stroll to nearby St Michael’s Church or into Tewin village. The more energetic can follow the old railway line path to Wheathampstead (7 miles) or if stately homes are your thing, head on foot or by bike to Brocket Hall (4.5 miles). Not sure where to go? Ask reception for a walking map (they’ve even got wellies and raincoats in all sizes, so you can grab and go).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p><strong>GOOD FOR:</strong> This would be a great pit stop for walkers and cyclists and also a winning destination for groups, families, dog owners, weddings and a big old bash thanks to its broad range of accommodation and hearty food.</p>



<p><strong>NOT FOR:</strong>&nbsp;If you’re looking for high-end glamour, this probably isn’t the place. While it would work for an intimate table for two, it can get very busy at the weekends with weddings, live music and celebrations all going on at the same time.</p>



<p><strong>THE DAMAGE: </strong>Starters from £7.50, Mains from £18. We stayed during Christmas and our room was priced at £265 for a Friday night (including breakfast).</p>
