Watford&#8217;s <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.watfordbigevents.co.uk/big-screen" target="_blank">Big Screen</a> is coming to and Woodside Playing Fields (15-21 aug) with an eclectic and plentiful schedule of screenings of old classics and new blockbusters, from The Italian Job to Sing 2. Just turn up and watch.

Or if you&#8217;re in Welwyn direction, the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Screen on the Green (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.wonderfulwgc.co.uk/cinema-on-the-green-2022" target="_blank">Screen on the Green</a> is back at Howardsgate from 18-21 Aug, with 12 family friendly movies screened over four days. The programme will cover littlies to older kids, from Encanto and the re-make of The Lion King to Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg in Uncharted and Emma Stone&#8217;s Cruella.

Stockwood Discovery Centre in Luton is holding a <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.culturetrust.com/whats-on/stockwood-garden-party" target="_blank">Summer Garden Party</a> on 20th Aug and 3 Sept with theatre, storytelling, puppetry and a parade on the final day (all free to attend!). 



Trying to keep up that summer holiday vibe? Feel the sand between your toes at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Hitchin's town beach (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.hitchinherts.com/events?id=22&amp;month=8&amp;event=3634" target="_blank">Hitchin&#8217;s town beach</a>. Just head to the Market Place and pull up a deck chair while the kids build sandcastles (until 29 Aug). Got a bookworm in the house? How about a competition to keep them busy? Beds-based kids&#8217; literacy charity, <a aria-label="School Readers (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.schoolreaders.org/bookreview" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School Readers</a>, is challenging Primary school children to submit a review of their favourite book (no more than 600 words) by 30 Sept, for the chance to win a Zoom chat for their class with Zanib Mian, best-selling author of Planet Omar, plus £25 worth of books for them and £100 worth of books for their school. Lovely!



Talking of books, head to Hertford and keep your eyes peeled for some familiar faces hiding in shop windows around the town centre. They&#8217;ve been knitted by the Secret Society of Hertford Crafters especially for a <a aria-label="children's book character trail. (opens in a new tab)" href="https://gohertford.co.uk/events/e/hertford-town-centre-summer-children-s-trail/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">children&#8217;s book character trail</a> (until 27 Aug). Grab a trail map from Tourist Information and if you find all of them you&#8217;ll be in with a chance of winning a voucher to spend in a Hertford store.

Imagine a programme of activities for kids that&#8217;s like a holiday camp but completely free &#8211; sounds too good to be true, right?! Wrong! Watford Council is running a schedule of summer holiday activities for ages 5-15, called <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Wat's On (opens in a new tab)" href="https://watson.events/" target="_blank">Wat&#8217;s On</a> (until 26 Aug) with everything from sports to stage school and adventure play to arts and crafts, plus food tech and film school. All you have to do is register and book to secure a place.
