<p>Watford&#8217;s first zero waste refill store, <a href="https://refillabell.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RefillAbell</a> (a nod to the former Abell chemist) focusses on ethical, sustainable, organic and local (where possible) products and was set up by Sameer and Jane to share the message that we are &#8216;Abell&#8217; to help save the planet by making small changes. And it&#8217;s pretty tempting when you see the array of tasty products that they have on offer. </p>

<p>For predominantly fair trade and/or organic products and from Growers Co-Operatives with the least air miles possible, try <a aria-label="Wholesome Weigh (opens in a new tab)" href="http://wholesomeweigh.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wholesome Weigh</a>, at their new Hitchin home on Hermitage Rd. There&#8217;s a huge range of products on offer here &#8211; including zero waste toiletries, vegan chocolate, dairy-free cheeses, loose leaf teas (did you know that most tea bags contain plastic?) and local produce (including black garlic from nearby Sandy). A lot of the products are supermarket price matched, too &#8211; so it won&#8217;t cost the earth to save it. They also now deliver across Hitchen (by cargo bike &#8211; so carbon-free!). </p>

<p>Now this is a slightly different set up. <a aria-label="Eat 17 (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.eat17.co.uk/bishops-stortford-2" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eat 17</a> has three stores &#8211; in London&#8217;s trendy Walthamstow, Hackney, plus right here in Bishop&#8217;s Stortford. The team also works alongside convenience stores, and this happens to be in a SPAR. But don&#8217;t let that put you off &#8211; this sharply designed shop/cafe is not your everyday corner shop! The offerings are local, low-to-zero waste and totally delicious, with an indoor street-food market vibe &#8211; think Bishop&#8217;s Stortford honey, a fresh fish counter, locally-made sausage rolls and pastries, craft beer, refills, and locally roasted coffee. Plus you can shop online too for everything from artisan to vegan goodies! </p>

<p>This lockdown business opened it&#8217;s doors (by appointment only) in April 2020, serving the Rickmansworth and Watford areas. Owner Wendy, wanted to set up a local refill store to avoid to need to travel far by car to find one, and to serve the needs of larger families (like her own) who previously relied on supermarkets. Most of the products are organic, with vegan and gluten free options plus household products including Miniml cleaning products, Upcircle ethical skincare and Who Gives a Crap? toilet paper. </p>

<p>This charitable upcycling enterprise donates all proceeds from its re-loved furniture and homewares to the Hospice of St Francis. The Berkhamsted showroom is packed with bespoke pieces so you can get your hands on something totally unique and feel good for rehoming something that may otherwise have been destined for the tip. They often run upcycling workshops, too, on everything from upholstery to chalk painting. </p>

They also stock gifts, such as chocolate-y treats and gorgeous smellies. </p>
