Ashridge House, Berkhamsted
This glorious Grade-I listed mansion in 190 acre grounds on the edge of Berkhamsted, was once home to royalty. Today it’s a stunning events venue, with 190 rooms, conference facilities, a rustic courtyard café, heritage restaurant, cocktail bar, spa and fabulous spot to tie the knot!
The spectacular Grade-I listed Ashridge House in the heart of the leafy Ashridge Estate, (and only 30 miles from London), has a rather regal heritage – I mean you only have to look at those stunning gothic turrets and crenelations to imagine kings, queens and princesses lording it up here! – it just oozes grandeur.
In fact it was once a royal residence of King Henry VIII and Elizabeth I – see if you can spot her statue in the grounds. On that note, there are 190 acres of glorious private gardens to explore, with the Italianate garden and fountain, a maze, topiary hedges and tree-lined paths, with beds that are bursting with colour in the warmer months. A lovely spot for a leisurely amble, or for the kids to burn off some steam at the weekend.
There’s also a lovely rustic café, The Bakehouse, for snacks, brunch and lunch in the pretty courtyard, where you can refuel, as well as a more formal, heritage restaurant, Acres. Headed up by chef, Paul Patterson you can expect dishes inspired by Ashridge’s rich history, created with locally grown foods and a modern twist. It’s open Weds – Sat evenings and Sunday lunch time, for a special alternative to the usual pub roast. Plus you’ll find a cosy cocktail bar, The Vault.
Since 2021, Ashridge has been a go-to venue, for seasonal and specialist public events, from its annual family friendly Christmas light trails, Halloween trail and Easter hunt, to summer screenings on the lawn and outdoor threatre. Plus you’ll find a schedule of workshops, Champagne house tours, afternoon teas, music and the occasional ball!
Ashridge House is also a spectacular wedding venue. You can choose to tie the knot on the magnificent sweeping staircase overlooking the Grand Hall (just imagine sweeping down those steps in your gown), or say ‘I do’ in the Lady Marian Alford Room with its opulent gold-leaf ceiling. If the sun is shining, you can use the South Terrace as your ‘stage’, taking advantage of the beautiful garden views.
And with 190 bedrooms onsite there’s no need to seek out alternative accommodation for guests coming from further afield. Well, all your friends and family can check in for the night and enjoy living like lords and ladies of the manor for the duration of the celebrations. There’s also a spa and gym onsite, too.
