<p>Wowsers, Netflix&#8217;s recent adaptation of David Nicholl&#8217;s hit novel, <em>One Day</em> has been an emotional rollercoaster hasn&#8217;t it?! The story follows Dex and Em from Edinburgh to Leeds and&#8230; ahem&#8230; the Cotswolds for that cringe-worthy scene where Dex meets girlfriend, Sylvie&#8217;s family in episode 9. BUT, the grand masion that poses as Sylvie&#8217;s Cotswolds abode is in fact <a href="https://beningtonlordship.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benington Lordship</a>, right here in Herts! AND you can go and see this filming location for yourself while the snowdrops are out, (and walk in the footsteps of upcoming stars, Leo Woodhall and Eleanor Tomlinson), until 25 Feb. Go, go, go! Not only that, Emma&#8217;s best frien Tilly&#8217;s wedding takes place at our very own Hatfield House (which has also featured in <em>Paddington 2, The Crown</em> and <em>Bridgerton</em>) including that garden scene with Em and Dex &#8211; double whammy for Herts! </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-barbie">Barbie</h2>



<p>Hang on a minute, so Barbieland isn&#8217;t in Hollywood, but right here in Hertfordshire?! Yep, you read that correctly. It might not be set in one of our big, glam country piles, but Watford&#8217;s Leavesden Studios is a local filming location that has drawn some big time celebs to our &#8216;hood over the years, including Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as it transformed into Barbieland for the £95m+ box office smash. Who needs Hollywood, when you&#8217;ve got Hertfordshire, eh? </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wonka">Wonka</h2>



<p>Similarly, some of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel was filmed in Leavesdon studios, but if you&#8217;ve seen <em>Wonka</em> (which came out in December), you might also recognise Timothée Chalamet in some local scenes. Namely St Albans&#8217; Verulamium Park, which was used for the Victoria circus scenes (complete with vintage stalls and fake snow!) with the lake, bridge over the River Ver and even the park map featuring in the movie. Plus, some of the money from the production co, (around £25k we&#8217;ve heard), has been earmarked by the council for improvements to the park and surrounding areas &#8211; great to hear that the local residents will feel the benefit too. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-masters-of-the-air">Masters of the air</h2>



<p>Spielberg&#8217;s much hyped wartime epic on Apple TV+, <em>Masters of the Air</em> is following in the footsteps of <em>Saving Private Ryan</em> and <em>Band of Brothers</em>&#8230; literally. Scenes from the movie and both series were filmed on a former British Aerospace airfield in Hatfield. You&#8217;ll also catch some scenes shot in Hemel Hempstead Old Town, which was transformed to a 1940s street with vintage shop fronts and vehicles. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wicked">Wicked</h2>



<p>Places you&#8217;d least expect to see pop princess Ariana Grande hanging out? A turf farm in the village of Ivinghoe near Leighton Buzzard could be top of your list. However, that&#8217;s exactly where the set for Munchkinland in the upcoming movie adaptation of the stage show <em>Wicked</em> was created. Colourful little turrets of straw (Munchkin houses) could be spotted from the country roads nearby (I spied them myself!), while tulip fields and even the famous Yellow Brick Road were built on this unassuming patch of farmland on the Bucks/Beds border. The UK release date for the first part has been confirmed as 27 November this year, so get it in the calendar!  </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-boys-in-the-boat">The Boys in the Boat</h2>



<p>This George Clooney directed movie &#8211; a true-life story of the University of Washington’s rowing team who, against all the odds, took gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics &#8211; came out last month in the UK. It stars Joel Edgerton and Callum Turner (<em>Masters of the Air</em> and Dua Lipa&#8217;s beau) flexing their muscles in tight lycra. What&#8217;s more, they were spotted filming at Hertfordshire&#8217;s County Hall in Hertford, in which the ballroom was used for one of the scenes. Plus we have it on good authority that Ashlyn&#8217;s School in Berkhamsted was another local filming location for the movie. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deadpool-3">Deadpool 3</h2>



<p>What to you get if you mix Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, some skintight costumes and crazy stunts in a quarry near Tring? The making of the third installmant of the comic book comedy <em>Deadpool</em> of course! The pair were spied in the Pitstone Quarry in the Bucks village on the border of Herts near Tring, in full Marvel character &#8211; Jackman as Wolverine; Reynolds as Wade Wilson&#8217;s ouspoken alterego. It&#8217;s due for UK release in September this year, so watch this space.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mary-and-george"><strong>Mary and George</strong></h2>



<p>This lavish, Royal Jacobean series (based on a true story) stars Julianne Moore as Mary Villiers, who schemed her way up through the courts by convincing her charismatic son to become a powerful and influencial lover of King James VI of Scotland and I of England. Expected to air on Sky One and NOW this spring you can expect bribery, seduction and treachery aplenty in this juicy new period drama, which should fill that <em>One Day</em>-Sixed hole in your viewing schedule. Keep your eyes peeled for the Marble Hall of Hatfield House, which is the setting for the King&#8217;s Banquet, ballroom dancing and a masque performance. Plus the Grade I-listed Rothamsted Manor in Harpenden gets a moment in the spotlight as Compton Manor, where Mary marries Sir Thomas Compton.</p>
