Sherry and tapas evening, Flagship Wines, St Albans, Fri 16 June

I’m going to this and can’t wait. Living in Spain introduced me to a whole new world of sherry and I left my childhood memories of Harveys Bristol Cream far behind me. This is an evening to taste sherry and tapas with Richard Witter from sherry house Gonzalez Byass in the Flagship Wines shop in St Albans. And it’s free! Olives and almonds thrown in! I love an early kick off and this starts at 6pm. See you there.

High Streets and Hedgerows: The Pelhams, Hertford Museum – until Sat 17 June

I’ve been meaning to go and a have a look at this since it opened and now it’s a case of while stocks last! Hertford Museum is just so quirky and well worth a visit. Discover the history of Furneux, Stocking and Brent Pelham and the characters who lived there. Objects, photos and recorded memories of those who made it their home.

Father’s Day Family Bushcraft Challenge, Lee Valley, Broxbourne, Sat 17 – Sun 18 June

Forget about glamping. This is WILD! A two-day family activity to celebrate Father’s Day at the Almost Wild Campsite in Broxbourne. It’s fully catered, and it’ll include everything you need to survive in the wild with skills that will come in handy for future camping trips. There will be an introduction to the tools and equipment required for bushcraft, including the safe handling of axes, knives, and saw. You’ll learn about fire lighting using friction and other methods, shelter building and water purification. You’ll enjoy wild food foraging and preparing wild foods (this sounds more glampy). Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult and minimum age of 8. £100 per adult, £50 per child.

Open Garden, Serge Hill, Watford, Sun 18 June

This looks fab. A 5-acre wild flower meadow (in your own garden, are you kidding?) and a Queen Anne House (this is starting to make sense) which by the way won’t be open to anyone who fancies a snoop around. Shame. But there’s a walled vegetable garden, long mixed border, a ha-ha, a stage and a ship. Let me move in now! This garden has been featured in the RHS magazine. Cream teas. 2-5pm. Serge Hill Lane, Bedmond, Watford, WD5 0RT

Book for: Little Welly Goes Wild, St Albans, Sat 15 – Sun 16 July

Little Welly is the biggest children’s obstacle course in the world! Or perhaps the biggest in UK. Whichever it is, you’ll be impressed. Big slides, tyre mangles, mud and water pits, a spider’s web, a wall to challenge all walls, a foam pit and a long pole run. And that’s really just a tiny taster. Children can collect their medal before embarking on a whole new chapter of activities. Prepare to be amazed. Prepare for an early night after a day of non-stop thrills and spills. And mud. Course tickets for children are £16 and adults £7.50. General admission £5.

First Chapter creative writing workshop, David’s Bookshop, Mon 19 June

A new monthly creative writing workshop launching at David’s in Letchworth. Writing can be a lonely business (I can vouch for that) and this workshop will promote a spirit of sharing, although reading your own work out loud is optional. Facilitated by John Harrigan, who has over twenty eight years of experience working as a writer for theatre and film. His work has been commissioned by Arcola Theatre, the Institute of Contemporary Arts, Secret Cinema and Camden People’s Theatre. He has facilitated arts based workshops for the Royal College of Art, Wilderness Festival, Central School of Speech and Drama and the BBC amongst others and he is a co-founder of the Weaponized imprint, a small press publisher. Open to writers of all ages 18+ working in all formats and mediums. Spaces are limited. Places cost £7.50. 7-9pm. To run on the third Monday of every month starting 19th of June.
