6 of the best local gins

Gin is the in thing and what better way to refresh the palate on a hot summer’s day (if the sun ever comes out that is!) than with a G&T? We’ve sniffed out the best local, small batch and craft gins for your delectation – just add tonic and ice!

Hitchin lavender gin

Ware-based distillery Copper in the Clouds has created this bespoke recipe using flowers grown at Hitchin Lavender for a fragrant twist on your gin and tonic – garnish with some fresh lavender for a fancy flourish.

Blackbridge distillery

Summer sip

The family-run craft distillery, Black Bridge, is based on the Luton Hoo Estate. Their ultra small batch gins are usually no more than 100 bottles, so be quick to grab one. This is their second limited edition summer gin featuring zesty lime and tart – locally grown – rhubarb. Serve with a slice of grapefruit to bring out the citrussy notes.

Garden City gin

Local flavour

The Spirit of Hertfordshire Distillery is based in an old Victorian saddlery in St Albands and their gins aim to capture the spirit of the local area. The Garden City Gin uses blossom picked from the Linden trees along Welwyn Garden City’s parkway, and resident forager, Richard, gathers botanicals from nearby hedgerows and ancient woodlands – doesn’t get more local than that!

£34.99 for 50cl

Hitchin honey gin

Get the buzz

Part of the Hitchin honey spirit collection from local producers, Cardona & Son, this golden drop infuses copper pot distilled London Dry gin with classic botanicals and raw honey from hives within a 10 mile radius of Hitchin, giving it a subtle sweetness. They recommend trying it as a French 75 – gin, Champagne, lemon juice and sugar. Mmm!

£37.50 for 70cl

Ultrasonic gin

Flight of fancy

Not only will this bottle look super cool on your drinks shelf, but £2 from every purchase goes to local charity, the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust too. Created by Puddingstone Distillery it’s inspired by the flight of native bats and even the distillation process is ultrasonic – a unique technique to extract maximum flavour and aroma from the botanicals. In this case there’s juniper, angelica root, elderflower, coriander seed, roasted barley, Bramley apple and mint.

£35 for 50cl

Willow tree gin

The first and (so far) only micro distillery in Bedfordshire brings us Willow Tree Gin. It’s infused with a distinctive combo of 12 local herbs and botanicals, grown on the farm in Sandy, which are smoked to give a unique richness of flavour. You can even visit the distillery and create your very own gin! Plus 50p from every full size bottle goes to the Forest of Marston Vale to plant new trees.
