<p>A family-run pub, Head Chef James – who previously worked alongside Gary Rhodes and Alistair Little – concocts gorgeous dishes with rustic French and Italian influences. A large dining room, bar area and roaring log fire make it perfect for a relaxed meal and it’s super dog friendly too.</p>

<p>This beautifully refurbed 17th century thatched inn in the pretty Bedfordshire village of Felmersham, is a proper country pub complete with low beams and a roaring fireplace. A really cool place to while away chilly winter hours, it offers two farm-to-fork dining menus and an enticing Farmer&#8217;s Tipples menu.</p>

<p>The décor is understated &#8211; no frills, such as statement art work or velvet banquettes &#8211; just simple and comfortable, exactly as you&#8217;d expect from a lovely local, with plenty of wood, leather seating, a Farrow-and-Ball-esque shade of sage green on the walls and a lush fire to relax by. All in all a heady cosy pub.</p>

<p>A huge inglenook fireplace takes centre stage at this 15th-century pub in the village of Watton at Stone. Legend has it, that the chimney was once the hiding place for Catholic priests during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. But today (thankfully) it’s just one of the snuggliest winter hide-outs in Hertfordshire.</p>

<p>Originally a pigeon coup used by monks, this is one of Britain’s oldest pubs (it’s been dated as far back as 793 AD!). Low ceilings, wooden beams and a huge fireplace make this everything a traditional pub should be – comfy, warm and inviting.
