Psst... Your resident Muddy sleuth here with all the local goss, from Michelin news to the launch of a homegrown tipple and more!
Look who made the Michelin Guide…
We might not have scored any coveted stars in Herts & Beds this year, but some of our fave local restaurants have been recognised for their fabulous food in the 2020 guide which was announced this week. The Fox & Hounds in Hunsdon retained its Bib Gourmand (the next best thing to a star), based on its great value dishes, classical combinations and hearty portions. Great work team!
Other foodie hotspots which gained a ‘plate’ and a well-deserved mention in this year’s red book were Muddy award-winning The Alford Arms in Frithsden, Crocker’s Chef’s Table in Tring, Thompson St Albans, The Falcon in Buntingford, The Fox and Hounds Barley and The Fox at Willian in Herts. Over in Beds Paris House in Woburn, John ‘O Gaunt Inn in Sutton and The Plough Bolnhurst were also recommended. Pats on the back and pints all round! These are the ones to watch guys, you heard it here first, so book your tables before everyone catches on!
Grow local, drink local
Muddy’s booze cabinet is rarely without a bottle of Campfire Gin – distilled locally at Puddingstone Distillery in Marsworth, Herts. So we were pretty excited to hear about their brand new limited edition product, which has been created using locally grown juniper berries. It’s a collaboration with the Box Moor Trust – a charity which has maintained the natural environment of 500 acres of local land for 425 years, including the recent reintroduction of juniper bushes to the area.
1594 Spirit of Boxmoor launches this weekend and you could be one of the first to try it at the Trust’s Autumn Festival (12-13 Oct). It will also be available from the Puddingstone shop and online for £34 (with £2 from the sale of every bottle going to the Box Moor Trust), and they’ve only made 425 bottle of the stuff, so get in there quick!
Anyone who lives in or around Berkhamsted might have noticed a buzz around the High Street boozer, The Lamb… that’s because it’s about to get a whole new lease of life courtesy of the guys behind funky local mobile bar outfit, Three Piece Bar, and the team from The Bull in Berkhamsted. We already know TPB are masters of mixology (Nigella is a fan!) so we’re expecting a killer cocktail list plenty of pizzaz behind the bar (à la Tom Cruise) combined with the look and feel of a contemporary country pub. It’s tipped to open before Christmas, so watch this space… Oh and if you fancy showing them a bit of support they’re running a Crowdfunder campaign to help get it off the ground. You can check it out here.
The Odyssey Spa in Knebworth has made the finals of this year’s Good Spa Guide Awards in the Best Health Club Spa category. Congrats to the team! They’ve already won a Muddy award and we’ve recently added them to our Little Black Book too – we know when we’re on to a good thing. Voting closes on 31 Oct so show them some support if you’re a fan too.
