ART: Herts Open Studios, various venues, 18 Sept – 10 Oct
Embrace your creativity (or just appreciate other peoples’!) at this county-wide exploration of art. More than 60 venues will open their doors to the public for real-life exhibitions, art trails, hands-on workshops and artist demos. OR if you prefer to go virtual, there’ll be daily themed online tours too.
FESTIVAL: Wilkestock, Hertford, 24-26 September
This charity music festival held on Frogmore Hill, Hertford is volunteer run and described as ‘the most intimate festival site ever’. There are tonnes of acts playing across 4 stages including local artists and those from further afield, plus live grafitti artists doing their thing, three bars, and a family friendly campsite with lockers, chargers and showers.
KIDS: Flower Power Hour workshop, Fredericks, Bishop’s Stortford, 25 Sept
If your little one has a passion for pretty things and some budding green fingers, this children’s flower arranging workshop will be right up their street. Join Herts-based florists, Fredericks of London for an hour of learning how to create a floral arrangement using oasis and fresh flowers to take home. £12 per child (age 4+) and a supervising adult. Drinks included.
COMEDY: Charity comedy night, Southern Maltings, Ware, 25 Sept
Let your hair down for a night of comedy, canapes and dancing the night away in aid of Chicken Shed Theatre – a fab charity which brings the arts to all young people and makes theatre accessible for all. Sara Louise Aston will MC the night, welcoming some of her funniest pals to the stage, as well as raising funds for her virtual London Marathon run in October.
FAMILY: Roller Disco, Bedford, 24 Sept
Roll back to the 80s and get your legwarmers out for a fun family roller disco at the Bunyan Sports Centre in Bedford. It’s actually a weekly event and has become one of Bedford’s best kept secrets (the cat’s out of the bag now!). Plus it’s from 3-4.30pm making it the perfect way to have a laugh with the kids and find out how much fun you can have for £4!
WORKSHOP: Calligraphy Foundation Hand, The Workshop, Dunstable, 25 Sept
Learn the traditional art of beautiful handwriting – mine’s gone to pot these days! – on this calligraphy course and you’ll be able to wow your friends and family with their next birthday card, (or get roped in to writing invitations and placecards for the next 500 family parties!) It’s aimed at total beginners and all materials are provided. £30 per person.
DRINK: Gin Festival, The Rose and Crown, Welwyn Garden City, 25-26 Sept
Come and taste over 100 gins – steady on! – at the Rose and Crown Pub this weekend. meet and buy gins from local distillery owners, enjoy some tasty BBQ food, live music and a bouncy castle (maybe not for the adults after the booze and burgers!) Tickets are just a tenner and include entry on both days, plus a goody bag with a balloon glass, a free G&T and tasting notes for all the gins on offer!
FOOD: St Albans FEASTIVAL, town centre, 26 Sept
St Albans’ month of food culminates in this one-day foodie extravagnza, where the town centre’s streets will be buzzing with over 100 food and drink stalls, entertainment, live music, cookery demos and activities for the kids. That’ll get you out of cooking the Sunday roast, then!
