Where to PYO pumpkins in Herts & Beds
Whether you've got little ones eager to carve some ghoulish grins or want to create a seasonal display with gorgeous gourds, these are the Herts & Beds PYO farms and patches to head to for your pumpkins this month.
Get stocked up with all your autumnal veg, from carrots and Kohl Rabi to potatoes and (of course) pumpkins at this PYO farm in Ivinghoe. There’s no entry fee, just pay for what you pick.
The Pop-Up Farm
I’ve visited this one before and loved it – it’s great for littlies as they can have free rein to roam around the 10-acre patch, near St Albans. There are wheelbarrows if you’re collecting a few and loads of photo opps (nothing cuter than a toddler sitting in a giant barrow of pumpkins, eh?!). It’s open every day from 19-31st Oct, but book in advance as it’s popular! Tickets are £2.95 per person (under 2s go free).
The Patch Weston
At this Hitchin hotspot, as well as plumping for the best pumpkins (priced from £2-£10), you can test your skills in the maize maze, fuel up at the refreshment trucks and buy some local honey from the bees that pollinated the patch! Tickets £3 (under 2s go free). It’s only open during Half Term week from 10am-3pm so make sure you book in advance.
Mead Open Farm
At the family activitiy farm in Billington there’s a Pumpkin Spooktacular from 23rd-31st, featuring fairy tale villains trail, haunted house and a tiny terrors tractor ride, plus a pumpkin patch where you can pick your own pumpkin to take home (pumpkin included in ticket price – adults from £12.45, kids from £11.45)
Rumbler’s Farm Shop
Expect to see some favourite fairytale characters, fun displays and looooads of pumpkins of all shapes and sizes as this popular Potten End farm shop near Berkhamsted. Entry is free and there’s no booking required. It’ll be open most days until 31st!
Find 20,000 pumpkins to pick and choose from on this 5 acre plot at a secret farm location in Moggerhanger. There are 25 different varieties of pumpkin and 10 varieties of squash, as well as mini tractors, pumpkin carving and space hoppers to enjoy too. Tickets £2.50, then pumpkins cost from £1 to £10+ for super-sized specimens!
Willows Activity Farm
This Peter Rabbit themed farm, near St Albans is holding its annual Pumpkin Festival from 16th-31st, with a picking patch, pumpkin hunt, gourd grotto and the usual programme of animal-based shenanigans. Tickets £24.50 per person, including all shows and activities.
Aldenham Country Park
Over in Elstree, kids will enjoy the Spook-fest from 16-31 Oct, with a scary trail, bug alley, monsters bale play, spider maze and horrid hay tractor rides. Plus, of course, there’ll be the chance to pick your own pumpkin at the straw patch then take it over to the marquee for carving. Tickets £7.50.
